Blackmagic Design Brings The Aviator to the Big Screen

Blackmagic's Decklink HD Pro and HDLink used by LA's Digital Neural Axis in post-production of new Scorcese film

BLACKMAGIC DESIGN 31st January 2005 - Blackmagic Design today announced that its Decklink HD Pro and HDLink were used in the creation of "The Aviator."

Integrated as part of the post-production workflow within Digital Neural Axis (DNA), a Venice, CA-based visual effects, design and digital post-production boutique, Blackmagic's Decklink HD Pro and HDLink were used to develop more than 60 visual effect shots for "The Aviator" and were instrumental in ensuring tight integration between California and New York post-production sites.

Developing many of the visual effects for the Hercules / Spruce Goose airplane sequence within the film, DNA (www.dnacorp.com) used the Decklink HD Pro and HDLink to mirror HD conformed offline edits of sequences completed in New York and to review internally developed effects shots in HD.

Using Blackmagic to view shots in sequence, DNA was able to be in complete synchronization with the film's VFX supervisor, Rob Legato, as well as Martin Scorcese's editorial team in NYC and was able to develop QuickTime shots of newly developed effects in order for approval to be given in both LA and New York. Thanks to HDLink's color precision and audio features, DNA was able to display color accurate HD versions of the 2K VFX shots on the boutique's 23 inch displays synchronized to 'work in progress' audio and story lines.

"We were responsible for the 53 interior shots in the 'Spruce Goose' sequence, another VFX company was handling the exterior shots." said Darius Fisher, President of DNA. "With the HDLink and HD Pro, not only were we able to stay in sync with other company's work, but we were also able to see the entire sequence in action. With Blackmagic we could much better sense the flow and pacing of the entire sequence and get a better feel for how well our effect shots were working in the context of the surrounding shots, in advancing the story."

With the use of HD within the film industry becoming a necessity, Blackmagic's DeckLink HD Pro and HDLink product lines have become popular choices for film post-production. Offering the industry's most cost effective line of video cards and monitoring solutions, Blackmagic has become an ideal solution for companies looking to improve workflow within a post-production environment without adding huge costs.

"With the supreme affordability and quality of Blackmagic products, I am seeing more and more visual effects and post-production houses integrating these tools into their quality control and post-production workflows. It is refreshing to see a constant stream of hardware and software upgrades and updates developed quickly and with new features that are always useful and innovative by Blackmagic, such as the new HD cards with 14bit analogue outputs built in, as well as DVCPRO HD capture and playback as a free software update to name a few." Fisher continued.

Sony, can we pleeeaassseee get some more support for Decklink cards?

My Decklink Extreme has been working great for many months now, but it would be nice to have some integration with Vegas.
