OT- Doc going for Broadcast

Hi all,
First, for those struggling to get your work noticed, Don't give up!
Our documentary has been accepted by our local PBS station for broadcast. It was shot with a GL-1 and Sony 300. Edited completely on VV3. I passed on VV4 at the time. (Now have VV5).

Our original goal was for the doc to be distributed on DVD. I now must prepare a broadcast master. My plan is to apply the conservative 7.5 setting of the broadcast colors filter to my final rendered track to make sure It is broadcast safe.

What about the colors bars? Should I place them on the timeline and run trhe filter? or just add them when I print to tape.

They wish a beta sp master, I was plannig on making a broadcast version, render, and printing to DVCAM and then dubbing to a beta deck.

I do not have a stand alone scope so I did not want to create reference bars that are not correct for the program.

Any advice out there!
Phil

If you're printing to tape, then just use the bars/tones offered in VV5's print to tape tool. That's our practice here, except we go straight to the Beta deck. However, your DVCAm with bars/tones will be accurate for the rest of the media since it's a dub.
Congrats on the acceptance! That's great!

First thing is to get the specs from the station as far as tape requirements - black - tone - leader - show start and so on. They would give that to you with the agreement I would think.

Somewhere in these threads I think SonyEPM said somehting about out from vegas with conserative settings on the broadcast filter and that PBS was fine with it. I would do a search on that to be sure.

You are correct, I actually remember reading this one after you mentioned it, it is all to easy to post and question and forget about the "search" function.

The tape requirements are in the agreement as well.

thanks,

Actually I meant this post:

But the post you mention says the same thing, minus the PBS part.

Most of the commercial broadcasters in this country don't seem to care much about the legal color bit, they'll just run it through their legaliser whereas our public broadcaster will just reject the tape. Even so I think it shows you know what your doing to get it right regardless.

As for bars and tone, get them how they want it, TC I wouldn't worry about, mostly they retime it to their standard anyway, countdowns it seems no one uses anymore.
