OT: don't have soundforge but need basic audio editing?

I was searching for a small, free sound recording app for my dad to convert some cassets to CD & came across this:
http://nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

It's a free windows sound editor. It's no sound forge replacement, but it lets you save in various sound formats, edit audio, do some small audio effects, etc. However, the REAL nice thing is that it has a freq anaylsis tool. Great for getting rid of noise. :)

Enjoy!

Wait a second... can't you already do all that stuff with Vegas?

As a good son, you should buy your Dad his own copy.

If you have more than one version of Vegas, say Vegas Video 3.0 or Vegas 4.0, you could give him a version you're not using.
Just contact Sony and have your serial number for an older copy you don't use, transfered to him.
That would be a nice gift that didn't cost you a dime.

I could, but he'd have no need for it. I just got V6 & have 4 here. He wanted something now though. I recomended AcidXpress for recording, but all he wants is a program to record & save as WAV.

He normally comes to me for all video stuff (and yes, I do it all for free or at cost if it's expensive. :) )

EDIT: you can't do the freq anaylis in Vegas. That's the only reason I've got it now. But yeah, Vegas can do everything it can (well, there's the whole reversing audio thing. :) )

Have him try Audacity. It is another good freeware product from Sourceforge.
Here is a tutorial.

You also could look for downloads of Cool Edit 2000. They are still around. It is a very good program with tutorials on the web.

Not exactly true with Vegas 6...The Voxengo SPAN VST is a real-time FFT spectrum analyzer PC VST plug-in.

Voxengo's "stereo touch" VST is another cool/free plug in...great for generating a stereo stream from a mono track.....

I searched source forge before going to downloads.com & couldn't find that. That program looks pretty cool!

thanks!

Those guys are great. Have you seen FLAC files yet? It stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. Sourceforge developed it along with a FLAC frontend converter that converts back and forth to WAVE. An entire two hour concert takes up around 900MB and sounds like the original when you convert it and burn it to a CD. Lots of bands are using it instead of the lossy MP3 codec. OGG Vorbis was really good until Sourceforge came up with another free winner in the form of FLAC files.

The VST feature of version 6 has opened up some great audio tools for vegas....:-)

That's funny. The guys in the audio forum don't seem that thrilled.

Like the video side, if your favorite feature didn't get incorporated, many think they got ripped off...:-)

Mark,
You obviously didn't read their complaints (many of them long standing) and made a bunch of assumptions. Just like the long standing complaints here on the video side.

Didn't mean to sound testy. I don't normally get that way. I am just tired of people making excuses for the company's shortcomings in terms of what needs to be addressed after ignoring the complaints version after version. Last year the level of my complaints were relatively toned down despite the fact that the complaints regarding Vegas 5's lack of addressing loingstanding problems was the same. I didn't buy it for that reason. This year I have been making more noise. I guess I have company finally.

I guess the old SoundForge XP lite would be more than perfect for this. Same no nonsense interface and basic tools than current SF. Tell me if you need it, i could send you one of the softs CDs i got with past hardware purchase.
