I have a dual layer drive and have yet to get the urge to burn DL media. Can't play it on most players, and as a backup media, external drives are far better (and cheaper!).
I agree. So far, DL is a bust. Assuming Blue-Ray or the other HD-DVD standard takes off, that will kill DL completely.
DGates is right. It is a bust.
Interesting pricing, however, and thank you for providing it!
I have yet to burn a DL disk, having watched the test reports and seeing that DL is, maybe, 90% compatible at the present time. Like everyone else here, I'm shooting for 100%, and willing to settle for 99%.
Still, I was amazed at the $1.50 price. This is a very good trend, and I won't be surprised to see DL with very good compatibility in a year or two and selling for $0.50 in bulk.
Of course, the question is whether it will be overshadowed by BluRay or HD-DVD disks. I personally don't think so; those disks need a new player, and it will take a decade for them to become commonplace. Why? Because DVD does an excellent job for 99% of the population now. There aren't any lines camped out in front of consumer electronics stores, waiting impatiently for the new BluRay players. I also think the film industry might kill this golden goose with all the DRM crippling that they are trying to force on the manufacturers, just like they did with DAT. We'll see.
EDIT: I was casually looking through the latest PCMag during lunch, and saw a very positive review on the new Pioneer DVR-R100 DVD burner. They said, "...Our DVD+R DL test discs worked flawlessly in all our DVD set-top players and computer drives.." They didn't mention the brand of disk used or the names and numbers of the DVD players, but nonetheless they were obviously very happy with the DL disks burned by this burner.
The article also mentioned that the Pioneer burner made the full 2.4x DL disk in less than 20 minutes, running at 8x. Things are getting much better than just last year.
