OT: DVCPro tape

Hiyas

I couldn't be bothered finding a tape forum as I read this one all the time and I'm sure that someone can give me an answer :-)

We ran out of 66 minute DVCPro stock the other day and I asked for some more. I got a call this morning from the guy picking up the stock from the local supplier. We have been using Panasonic AJ-P66MP stock for a couple of years now with no problem and that's what he was getting. But the supplier was trying to tell him that it was 25 MB/s only. He had rung me to check and I said they had their heads up their bums and the only difference was tape speed. I then did a rethink and wondered whether there might be a difference in oxide as well? I've recorded lots of stuff at 50MB/s (which we need to get 2 main audio and 2 M&E tracks) and had no complaints - transferred to DigiBeta plenny of times.

But I did notice our longer 90 minute tapes do have DVCPro50 written on them, which the 66 minute ones don't.

So - is there a difference?

Cheers

DVCPro50 is a higher quality while DVCPro isn't (but they are both WAY better then DV). However, if you don't have a DVCPro50 player/recorder, it will record in DVCPro 25 format (plaiun DVCPro) anyway.

Get the 25 unless you habe the hardware to use the 50.

I have the hardware (ie a DVCPro50 machine). My question was more whether there was a difference in the tape stock, not in the recording method.

I've been recording in 50 Meg/s and it seems fine, but this dealer put a seed of doubt in my mind ...
