OT: DVDtoMP4 w/ Handbrake: anamorphic, modulus...

I have a DVD that is standard NTSC 720x480 and need to convert it to an H.264 MP4 for viewing on computers, tablets, phones, etc. with programs like VLC or Windows Media Player. After doing some test encodes, I notice that people look squished vertically in the resulting MP4 file.

Found this guide on the Handbrake site, but I'm even more confused after reading it than I was before. https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/AnamorphicGuide

So my questions are:

On the picture tab, what should I set Size, Anamorphic and Modulus to so that the encoded MP4 looks correct?

Use the Normal preset. Does all this for you.
Further questions, post to the Handbrake forum, and include your logs.

Assuming this is standard 4:3 video, in Handbrake, turn Anamorphic to "none" and set the width to 656 and the height to 480.

Yes it is normal 4:3, 720x480, not widescreen, i.e. no black bars. I will try the advised settings and see how it goes, thank you for the replies.

With anamorphic set to "none," when I put 656 in for the width, the height automatically goes to 438. I tried the other modulus options, but none of them allow the height to go to 480.

Untick the "Keep Aspect Ratio" box.

John, thank you that seems to do the trick, looks much better. Only other question is deinterlacing. Since this is a standard DVD, the video is interlaced. Should I use decomb or deinterlace if the footage is known to be interlaced? And which dropdown setting would be optimal?
