Beautiful! Brought shivers up my spine. Where did you get all those wonderful paintings of Jesus?

P.S. Did you use Ulead for the opening title. Really nice!
Jay Gladwell wrote on 11/17/2003, 12:41 PM
Thanks, Paul, for your kind remarks. Most of the images came from magazines and the rest came from a collection of paintings based on stories from the Scriptures.

Actually, the titles were done using V4's Media Generator and the Credit Roll template.

EDIT: Duh... it just hit me. You may have been referring to the GDP animated logo. No, that was done with LightWave 3D.

I liked it, too. You might very easily have made it both too sentimental and too complicated. But you didn't. Nice work.

The Singer had a Great Voice. Reminded me of Jason Donovan, when he was in Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Good Artwork TOO.

Of course I couldent help thinking Whilst watching(Sorry) that Jesus is a Jew. And would therefore have Dark hair, Jewish nose, Jewish features. and current thinking is" His hair" would be shortish. How on earth we in the West can portray him as Anglo Saxon is beyond me.

I knowI knowIknowIknow...

Its only a reference and not a true representation..

Anyway that Aside A very Beautiful film and very thoughtfull of you to make a film about Christ..
TorS wrote on 11/17/2003, 1:51 PM
Well, Mark
Some of the Christ images and paintings do seem historically far-fetched, to put it mildly. And one may well begin to wonder if it's a representation of his universality and trans-raciality, or simply an expression of our Western arrogance. A bit of both, most likely.
But then again, you should remember, he's only half jewish. :-)

I think the pictures are from medieval times and just Stuck. But surely anyone these days looking for the TRUTH and Enlightenment would see Jesus looking like a westerner as a major mistake. I certainly do. I also admit that in the past it dident occur to me to question. But then I once believed in Father Xmas OOPS shouldent say that I wont get my xmas lights..

Mark, I found something that I had read years ago regarding a physical description of Jesus. You can take it for what it is worth.

The following was taken from a manuscript which is reported to be copied from an original letter of Publius Lentullus at Rome. It being the usual custom of Roman Governors to advertise the Senate and people of such material things as happened in their provinces in the days of Tiberius Caesar, Publius Lentullus, President of Judea, wrote the following epistle to the Senate concerning the Nazarene called Jesus.

"There appeared in these our days a man, of the Jewish Nation, of great virtue, named Jesus [Yeshua], who is yet living among us, and of the Gentiles is accepted for a Prophet of truth, but His own disciples call Him the Son of God- He raiseth the dead and cureth all manner of diseases. A man of stature somewhat tall, and comely, with very reverent countenance, such as the beholders may both love and fear, his hair of (the colour of) the chestnut, full ripe, plain to His ears, whence downwards it is more orient and curling and wavering about His shoulders. In the midst of His head is a seam or partition in His hair, after the manner of the Nazarenes. His forehead plain and very delicate; His face without spot or wrinkle, beautified with a lovely red; His nose and mouth so formed as nothing can be reprehended; His beard thickish, in colour like His hair, not very long, but forked; His look innocent and mature; His eyes grey, clear, and quick"

NIce job. If I was doing it I would have changed three things.

1. No company logo at the start. Generally a no no for this type of production, especially if of the razzle-dazzle type. Not really appropriate for this kind of a project. If you must, at the end instead.

2. Transitons are too short. There's little point in using them if you don't really see them and they just flash by in a second or so.

3. I'd add one of the classic Christmas carols at the beginning while the intro text scrolls.

Overall though nicely done. ;-)

Nicely done!

I felt the long text at the beginning would have come across much better with audio there as well.

Nice pic of the SLC Christus.

VideoCurmudgeon,
I hope you know I did not mean to criticize your use of the Christ images, nor did Mark, I'm sure. Both our comments were directed to the common (Western) tradition of depicting Jesus like "one of us". You have used a beautiful collection of images in (and near) that tradition, obviously very carefully chosen and edited.

I love Cristmas Carols. Usually at this time of the year I'm desperate to bring out the record collection from its hiding. But my wife says I have to wait until Advent. (I fooled her this year, though. I just edited the family video shots from last Christmas, and had to go through a lot of the albums to choose the right music. It was like smoking in the john, only more healthy.) Nevertheless, I disagree with BillyBoy's third point. A Carol at the beginning would have been the obvious choice, and that is why it would be wrong. Especially set up against that song you used (I'll never smoke that anywhere). If you had used a Carol you ought to have used only that, and it would have become a very different video. Certainly less original.
On the logo thing, I agree with BB. And the transitions - matter of taste, really. Too short, too many - I think the two other points make a bigger difference.

Tor, I took no offense at all at the comments on the depictions of Jesus. That quote was provided simply because the discussion had reminded of it, no more no less. I thought some might find it interesting, some may not.

Insofar as any other comments are concerned, opinions (good, bad, or indifferent) are like noses. Everyone has one. The ones I agree with, I give serious consideration. The ones I disagree with, I simply ignore. The video was made just as our way of saying Merry Christmas. Some will like it, some will not. I recognize that.

Using Christmas cards as an example, over the years I have received many from friends and relatives. Some were beautiful, and I wish I had sent them. Others I looked at with deep appreciation, but the thought did cross my mind that *I* would not have sent that particular card. In the end, it boils down to a matter of taste.

Sorry for being so long-winded.

Thanks again!

Thanks TorS A very good summing up of what I meant. I do hope that Videocudgeon did not take offence as this is not my intention

While watching the Film I was saying to myself all along. this takes the biscuit Taking Jesus Image (Which the second Commandment prohibits) AND making him western. And then using a probable thirteenth cENTURY iTALIAN Hoax to support this

www.answers.org/bible/description.html

Isaiah 53:2
For he shall grow up before him as a Tender Plant and as a root out of dry Ground. He has no form nor Comeliness and when we see him there is no beauty that we should desire him. (Certainly not the delicate beauty in the western view)

Paul Corinthians 11:14
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long Hair it is a dishonour to him.
(In other words First Century Society frowned on long hair )

some Interesting web sites

www.nextwave.org/may01/seeking.htm
www.lightplanet.com/mormons/basic/christ/physical_appearance.htm
www.jerusalemperspective.com/articles/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=1667

Or do searches on Jesus Apearance or Publius Lentillus.

If I showed my Mum THIS film she would love it the same way kids do school plays Artwork ect ect Most western society is happy to accept Jesus in the way you have and for people who do not follow the bible or interpret it there own way I have no quarrel with that. On that basis I accept this film.

In the back of my mind though I know the second commandment should be adhered too But like most of us. Do not . I am also completely satisfied that Jesus looked like a Jew and not some thirteenth Century artists depiction.

Dont think I am looking to take the opposing view (Being Argumentative) my original statement was made after watching a documentary about Jesus appearance. cant remember the name of the programme now though.

My only Interest is the truth regardless of who is right.
Jay Gladwell wrote on 11/18/2003, 6:38 AM
Mark, no, I'm not the least bit offended. As a matter of fact, I agree with your basic premise: It's not who is right, that is important. It's what is right!

Intelligence Is a Virtue. .Well put Jay
TorS wrote on 11/18/2003, 7:13 AM
Mark,
I've seen that documentary. Wasn't it called CSI Nazareth? It had a professor build a head of an ancient Jew based on an old skull or something? Interesting, yes. Important, no. Hollywood would still cast Mel Gibson in the role. And artists all over will continue to create their own versions, within or in contrast to the tradition. Thus the tradition lives.

We all know that cultural elements change and blend and may become unclear when they travel long distances. A Norwegian anthopologist was visiting a souvenir shop in Japan once, and found some little Santa Claus figures, crucified. I'll prefer the Italian painters any time.

TorS

LOL I agree Do you remember the third Indiana film where Indy has to pick the true Cup of Christ. "A Carpenters Cup".

Not one covered in ornate jewels. Well I think If your searching for the truth then these sort of things are kinda like guides down the wrong path. Religon is a personal sometimes lifelong commitment. So to have real believable faith you have to have real facts. IMAGINE being refused entry to heaven because your whole life you broke the second commandment and dident even know it. Might sound silly but .....

One of my Arguments about following the Bible is I could not go to heaven and leave my Mum AND Nan out.

Or the rest of my Family.

Thats not Saying they are bad (Actually they are the Best) but dont go to church ect ect. Or the old one about well If the world was created 6000 years ago then why several species of hominoids and Dinosaurs. EXPLAIN that then.

And they do but not in a very likely way.

I am now being told that if your good then your Family go to heaven on the strength of that. Well what if a family member was not very good !!!

I believe in God I know Jesus existed I just dont know the best way to find God I sometimes think if god has been with you your whole life would you neccesarily know. Thats the problem I dont.

OK OK Im now completely Off Topic and religon and politics are not anything to do with Vegas Forums TorS quick question for you then.

when your clips are in the media pool can you put them in bins from there or do you have to put them in bins from outside of vegas.
TorS wrote on 11/18/2003, 9:14 AM
I honestly don't know. Religion is more real to me than the media pool. I don't use it. I channel captures to the folder I want directly in Capture. And I find it easy to load events from various folders using the Vegas explorer. I don't feel I have to move them before I use them.
