I know this became a somewhat vexed topic recently and to some extent I'm having to eat humble pie on this one but so be it.
It might just be a statistical anomaly but we're seeing demand for the EX1 go through the roof. The Z1 is just about dead and the V1P, well it just never really took off, pity really, I quite liked it. We're thinking about divesting ourselves of all HD tape based cameras. A lower cost / simpler to use HD camera based around SxS cards would be the final nail in the coffin for tape. The Z7 just don't cut it, what dummy decided it should only have one CF slot?
That said there's still a problem on the road to tapeless nirvana and it isn't anything to do with codecs. That's a very different issue, DVCPro HD, AVCHD or long GOP mpeg-2 the issue is the same and I can't understand why it hasn't been fixed yet. Sony had a good shot at it with the original XDCAM, why did that functionality get ditched / not implemented in XDCAM EX. I expected to see it in the new clip browser but not so it seems, maybe I've missed it.
What we need is a way at the end of the day to hand off footage to the client for them to review and/or decide which shots they want i.e. replace / enhance the old school way this got done with tape. This should be a snap to do with tapeless. XDCAM had it under it's belt, what happened. I don't need this but I can as sure as heck understand why others do.
Adobe seem to maybe have a viable solution, where is SCS in all this. It could be a killer feature for Vegas and another utility / proxy viewer / clip logger and EDL logger. Take client's EDL back into project and half the work is done.
Bob.
