OT - Facebook and directing

vicmilt wrote on 12/11/2008, 11:04 PM
I've been posting topics and replies on this wonderful site for years, and loving it - I've helped a few folks, and I've learned a heck of a lot at the same time. The power of this group is extraordinary!

So... lately I discovered Facebook.
One of my kids turned me on to it.
I had thought it was mainly a dating scenario for college kids, but it's developed into a whole lot more than that! (The recently converted (me) are always the most enthusiastic).

Anyway - I've just started a group on Facebook called, "I want to direct a movie" and I invite you all - old buddies, pros, gurus and newbies, to join me there in spreading the wonder of movie creation.

Go to Facebook.com
Start your own page.
Add me as a friend, "Victor Milt"
Then find "groups" and look for "I want to direct...etc) and join me on yet another road, as we all continue to invent the new media. I can use the help... and the company.
And like this site, it doesn't cost a dime.

It certainly doesn't replace this site in any way - but it does open the door to directing, shooting and producing. And it's brand new, so you can certainly make your mark. Join me.

Cool! Still learning face book and I am one that looks better behind the camera
than in front!

I joined too. I've uploaded several movies to Facebook. I was wondering if anybody here knows about the best way to render/prepare movies for Facebook?

Ian,
Not sure if this is the recommended way as I am just learning to use these sharing sites.

I recently went through the painful process of encoding an AVI file rendered out of Vegas Pro 8.0c (NTSC DV template) using QT Pro. I used the H.264 codec and when uploaded to Vimeo, it looks really good after their conversion to Flash. I then connected Vimeo to my Facebook page. Search for my name on Vimeo and check out "The Doorman". I was camera only on that short, but got a copy of the edited AVI file.

Also tried Google video and did not like the end result one bit.

Hope others can chime in with their expertise.

HTH,
Tom

Hi Vic,
Nice idea/invite and I checked out your page and one of your DVD promos. And, wow, I sometimes forget how many real pros there are here (I'm a mere serious amateur filmaker).

I also don't have the funds to have the kind of gear you have or buy DVDs either. But I'll look into more of your YouTube offerings online. One more source of wisdom.

As to Facebook membership:

I had a MySpace page at one point but it drove me nuts, so not sure I'd venture into Facebook (though the guy who started it engineered the whole online Obama campaign -- and I assume Change.gov which I visit.

I also noticed you have TED.com listed. Now that's a fascinating place for cutting edge anything in any field that I discovered a while back. And you just reminded me to go check it out again :o)

So I may not join you at Facebook, but do wish you and all a fruitful community-building adventure.
