OT: ffmpeg and 7z file and free 7-zip utility

will-3 wrote on 4/9/2015, 9:24 AM
It has been awhile since I've done a ffmpeg installation and discovered that the windows 64bit version downloads as a 7z file type... with which you have to buy WinZip or use an open source utility like 7-zip.

Can anyone vouch for the free 7-zip utility... or suggest something else?

I was unable to find an exe installer available on the ffmpeg site... ditto for a zip file format that windows native zip application can work with.

thanks for any help.

I've been using 7-Zip for a long time and it's great. It extracts RAR files too as I recall :)

No problems with 7-zip here on any of my PCs (XP, Vista and Win-7).

7 Zip works fine, but I use PeaZip most of the time because it's so simple to use.

I have used 7zip for 10 years or so. Works just fine and opens most compressed archive formats. I only use it for reading files. When creating a ZIP I just use the Windows 7 send to menu item to create a very generic ZIP file that anything will be able to open.
