OT: First 7D shoot

SWS wrote on 7/24/2011, 2:27 PM
I guess I'm the only person in the world that hasn't shot something with a DSLR. So here is my first foray into a project shot with a Canon 7D.

Some friends are doing a stage play and wanted to shoot a promo. My buddy lent his 7D for the project so I assembled some gear and did the evening shoot. Had my Sony PCM-D50 for audio with some Sennheiser G3 wireless mics. And a couple of cheap 160 LED battery lights.

It's rough I know. Didn't have good glass and was using a make-shift variable ND. I was using 2 polarizing filters in my mattebox. It's pretty soft, focus-wise. Edited in Vegas Pro 10e using Boris CC7 and New Blue's FE Film Pro.

The sphere effect is pretty cheesy I know...sorry.

Guess I need a few more eyes to check it out... criticisms good for the soul!

Your soul is in good shape!

Aside from being a bit harrypotterish, the only thing that bothered me technically was that the frame rate of the "film look" was quite a bit slower than the actual source. In turn, the subject movement looked too smooth to the simulated flicker.

Good work!

Good point it was shot at 1080 30p. And the flicker was just random settings in NewBlue.

SWS,

I used to live in Nashville - mid 1970's. Did you ever run into a good friend, "Bob Furniss" who owned Chapel Films?

Hey Jerry. I was just gettin' started at that time here in Nashville. I remember Chapel Films and Bob's name sounds familiar but I don't remember meeting him...sorry. Did you know the legendary B filmmaker Ron Ormond who was making films around here at that time?

SWS,

No, I didn't know Ron Ormond. I, also, was new to the world of filming/video at that time (although, I remember fiddling with a loaner Sony B&W camera connected to a portable reel-to-reel recorder while in Nashville).

Actually, Bob Furniss was a neighbor of mine. About the time I left Nashville, Bob was making his mark in local theater productions as an actor. I believe he left Nashville for Hollywood - that's where I lost track of him. He was the spitting-image of Jonathan Winters.

btw, I liked your promo!
btw2, Of all the places I've lived, I liked Nashville the best - a sophisticated city that belies its country-bumpkin image.

SWS,

Nice work!

Two small suggestions that I think would make this even more effective:

1. Ask the actress for a quick ADR to have her say, "Who are you?" in a less "modern" voice (so we're not taken out of the old world), but try just using audio filters first.

2. Change the spelling of the word "Magic" on the card after "How did you do that?" to "Magick" (the olden way to write this).

SWS, well done. It reminds me of the jittery, old-timey shots from The Ring. Very spooky.
