So here's a question... not exactly sure it's within the scope of this thread but....

Why is everybody so gung ho over avchd??? It seems to me that avchd is the very flexible avc/h.264 codec all wrapped up with an audio track and some overly restrictive specifications.

While it is true that camera manufacturers do need SOME kind of standard to follow... why avchd? Given the incredible flexibility and bitrates that h.264 can reach... I have to ask why the avchd standards are set so low?

Sanyo for example has not bothered with avchd at all really... and they're first out of the box with 1080p. Not sure if this has anything to do with bypassing avchd or just plain coincidence...but none the less it is less restrictive and works more universally.

Why play with avchd at all if you can simply go to the horse's mouth to start with (so to speak)

with proper light, you have to wonder if this could produce a decent slo-mo image.

And to the "wandering thread" - Would be great but why on earth didn't they at least make them 1/3" imagers????

Mmmmm...

Apparently they're waterproof too. I'm not sure I would take them that deep though! They're supposed retail for under $600

blink- "Mmmmm...

Hope you didn't misread that. The 1080p's are not waterproof but the 720p colored ones are. Still cool though.
