I bought a Flip HD Ultra camera to experiement with.
Any users here who could share their experience on how to best edit the video from one of these small cameras in Vegas? I did a search of the forum and didn't find any previous messages on the topic.

Actually, you should have asked this question BEFORE you bought the camera. The general experiences that I have read is that many/most of these small HD cameras shoot in an mpeg4 delivery format that is great for uploading directly to YouTube and horrible for editing. Some of them like the Aiptek GO-HD shoot Quicktime that only works on a Mac and you have to buy Quicktime Pro and patch the files to be able to edit them on a PC. In general, these cameras are to be avoided if you plan to edit your work. They are really "shoot-n-share" cameras.
In Keith Kolbo's article Using GO-HD files in Sony Vegas Pro 8 he explains the Quicktime hack that is needed and someone replied as a comment that: "This is also works if you have a Flip Video Ultra". That may be your answer right there.

The Flips that I have worked with use .AVI wrappers. The CODEC inside is the Xvid CODEC. VP9 (32) works if the Xvid CODEC is installed which it is if you install the FlipShare application from Flip. VP9a(64) will not work because no one has compiled a 64 bit VFW version of the CODEC at the moment.
JR: The camera was a relatively inexpensive purchse ($170) so I wasn't expecting too much. I was pleasantly at the quality of the videos when I played them back from the Flip HD via HDMI to my LCD TV. Of course since the camera lacks image stabilization, the video can get "jumpy" if you are not very careful when shooting.
I was able to load and playback the Flip HD clips directly into Vegas 8.0c, Vegas 9.0a and the latest version of Premiere Pro with no problem. I was even able to render out 720P video that I played back on my Sony PS3. However, all three programs crashed when I got to 35-40 clips (around 5 minutes of video). It seemed like a memory issue, but I'm just guessing.
KK: I'll take a look at your article.
What I ended up doing was transcoding the Flip HD MP4 clips with MPEG Streamclip to Quicktime Motion JPEG A and then editing them in Vegas 9.0a. So far so good.
