OT: Forum Speed

Bob Denny wrote on 12/6/2007, 8:32 AM
There's no "forum" section so I'm posting here. My apologies in advance.

To those who run this forum: It is agonizingly slow. Response times vary from some seconds to as much as 10 seconds.

This is NOT my internet connection! I use many forums and other web sites, and the speed of the Sony Forums is far far slower than virtually anything else. I did a "traceroute" to sonycreativesoftware.com and it shows that the basic connection turnaround is well under 100ms. In fact the sonyonline.net routers are right off my Cox backbone; only 8 hops total to get to sonycreativesoftware.com. So the problem is that the system(s) hosting the forums are overloaded, or the internal net connection used by that server is choked. I'll bet it's the former (overloaded server).

The slow speed really limits the usefulness of this service.

Bob, as you've posted 7 times so far, I'm guessing you find it too much of a bother?

Actually I haven't noticed too much tardiness? In fact, what time it does take - 5 seconds? - it helps me to get my ramble thoughts together. So, it suits me! - I must say that the search facility has/did drag its feet the last 2 weeks.

Time permitting, Bob, I look forward to more of your input in the near future.

Grazie

No, I'm just a brand new user! I'm here because I'm trialing Vegas Pro. And I did just respond to your backup post with some (hopefully) useful info :-))

Bob! YES! Thank you . . You appear to have a great depth of knowledge. You will find others here who have masses of Vegas knowledge. And yes, well worth the wait!!!

Again, thank you - and hullo!

Hullo to you! :-)

"Back to Vegas - Video" just took 45 seconds to respond, ugh.

Just hit the "Back" key on the browser or backspace on the keyboard. It will be faster. I only refresh the main screen periodically and then use the "refresh" button in the browser.

I agree that it's noticeably slower than other forums I visit.

And I also agree that it doesn't matter that it's slow.

Not to start an argument... but it does matter at least to me and that's why I made the comment. It was meant to be constructive (consider a faster server machine). If it didn't matter to me I wouldn't have said anything :-))))

As far as I know, this forum software was developed years ago by someone at Sonic Foundry. At the time there probably wasn't a lot of thought given to scalability, particularly when it came to referencing a database with thousands and thousands of messages in it. I have no idea what type of database engine runs the forum, but it seems to have been getting progressively slower and slower as the number of messages has increased over the years. It may be that this forum will eventually crumble under its own weight. I REALLY like the user interface of this forum and wouldn't like to see that change, but a little snappier user experience would be nice.

I have to agree. Lately I've noticed it's been deadly slow and I admit that after waiting for two or three posts to appear I've just left and gone to the next forum. Several times last week I got messages stating that the connection has timed out. Something is definitely slowing things down for some of us.

I agree with John. The waiting frustrates me and I'm off to the next forum. In fact I often find that the page never loads!
