OT: Future Proofing with Opteron on AM2

After having upgraded to an AMD 3800 X2 AM2 socket, I was on NewEgg this morning and discovered several AM2 socket Opteron CPU's. They seems fairly reasonable in price so hence the question.

Could someone tell me if moving to these processors would actually reduce my render times as compared to the standard X2 series? What advantage, if any, is there by moving to the Opteron series over the Athlon X2's?

TIA,

Cliff

For some reason I'm under the impression that you can't cross-grade from an X2 to an Opeteron, evenif the socket is the same. Check your motherboard's specs to see if it supports Opteron processors.

That sure seems strange to have a common socket but not able to use the opteron... I'll check Gigabytes website.. Thanks for the headsup... :-)
