OT - gmail for your own domain webmail

For those of you who have your own website, and use that website's email service, like you@yourdomain.com, you are most likely using webmail like Horde or Squirrel, or the PC-based Outlook Express.

I don't know about you, but I was never crazy about Horde, and even worse (for me) was Outlook.

Many folks prefer the look and feel of webmail like Yahoo, Hotmail, or gmail. The problem with that is you have to have an email address like you@yahoo.com, you@gmail.com, or you@hotmail.com.

Well, Google has recently allowed you to use their gmail web interface for your own domain webmail. VERY cool.

You don't have to have a gmail account.

Go to Google account and create a Google account and get started. Once you get your Google account, just change your MX records to point to Google, and that's it. (there are instructions for this, not too hard)

Oh, and it's free of course and you get 2GB of storage, that of course doesn't count toward your webhost's storage limit.

A month or so ago jrazz casually mentioned this in a spam-topic thread, and I got it setup shortly after that. (Thanks jrazz!)

But I thought it was cool enough to have it's own topic. Been loving it.

Will this work if you already have a GMail account?

Well, the point is to be able to use a gmail-type email interface with your domain email.

Do you have your own website domain now? And do you use email with it?

MX records are an email setting that you would change on your webhost to make this work. Some folks can change this setting through their control panel, some may have to contact their web host tech support to do this.

Don't let the "MX records" thing stop you from trying this, it's not that hard to change them.
