OT: Great "Gearbag" for location use

Geeks.com sells an Aluminum Notebook Case for $17.99/$15.99 depending on size, with a padded interior, inside flap pocket for sound sheets, etc., and a built-in combination lock.

I've been using this for carrying compact but fragile and expensive audio gear to location shoots. Couldn't ask for a better case than this at anywhere near this price (although I even got free shipping when I bought mine last summer :O).

Handcuffs to clip the case to your wrist are optional, but would really add to your cool factor... :O)

I've got the same case for free. They were sold down here with a set of BBQ utensiles in them. Why you'd need a combination lock on BBQ utensiles is an interesting question, maybe to stop the fairer sex from taking over the blokes job?

For most of my kit I just buy cheap toolboxes. Unlike many of the pro cases they don't say 'steal me' and are big enough for quite a bit of gear. Definately not suitable for air travel though.

"Barbie" (Oz edition) case? I never would have guessed!

I could see one for the utensils, and a second one where the padded interior has been partially replaced with dry ice and the rest neatly carved out to hold rows of jumbo shrimp...

I have always avoided pro cases for the same reason you're avoiding them, but at the same time one has to protect one's gear. How do you do that with toolboxes? Do you make custom foam inserts?

Most of the gear that goes into the toolboxes is stuff like audio cables and lighting so no need for any protection.
For cameras, I just cut my own foam. However if my camera was going inside anything other than my own vehicle then I'd be getting a Storm case.
The other alternative, we've got a local business that makes custom welded aluminium cases with laser cut foam. These cases are very flashy and definately say Steal Me.

One thing I've found very handy to put inside cases, especially the airtight ones are silica gel canisters. I'm currently trialing the SG-40 from Hydrosorbent Products, Ashley Falls MA.

I got this Task Force (R) Classic Tool Case at Lowe's. The foam is pre-scored in 1/2-inch squares. I made compartments for my two cams (GS250s), lenses and gear to fit into.

"These cases are very flashy and definitely say Steal Me." Oh so right.

I have two of them for all my microphones. What a bargain they were.
