OT: Had it with Epson printers!!!

I'm fed up with Epson printers too. I've got a Stylus Photo R800 at the moment and it is driving me nuts.

It gets through ink like an alcoholic drinks beer, and currently has a head clog that is IMPOSSIBLE to remove. While it printed incredible photos when I first bought it, now I can't get anything other than text out of it. Photos have severe streaking and missing tones. And no matter how many nozzle clean cycles I use, or specialised cleaning kits I cannot for the life of me get anything decent out of it now. The ink also costs a fortune.

Years ago I used to have a Canon that had the print head nozzles in the cartridge itself. This was a fantastic idea. I'm glad to hear that HP are now doing this.

I was considering a colour laser printer until I recently read in a very highly respected scientific magazine (not available off the shelf) that many laser printers are producing potential cancer causing toner particles to emit from them.

Reminds me in some ways of my '62 MG-A. It too needed a push from time to time.

A push? What? You lost the handcrank?

(Used to scare the heck outa me to use the handcrank... Still, the coolness factor of it was even better than a having a mattebox for my DVX.)

HP inkjet printers have always been this way from the beginning. I consider it a requirement when choosing a printer.

I also forgot to mention that I have a Xerox 100 laser black & white on a parallel port that will print out about 20 pages to one of inkjet printers. It is so fast it can print out a 70 page manual before you can log on to this forum. (Just funnin)

This thread must be bad luck, yesterday my Epson's yellow print head when bad, so I ran out and bought a cheap HP for the my son's project and that died after 14 hours ( no power-- looks like the transformer end).

Anyone tried the new Kodak printers? All I know is that the black ink cartridge is $10 and the color ink cartridge is $15.

Sherman, re the Epson R200 CD tray. Do a search on this forum. About a year or two ago someone posted a source of supply for those. And the thing is they were dirt cheap, well under $10 each. And you're not alone, mine also requires a little nudge to get it going. I have found that it isn't a matter of pushing it in, if you lift the tail end gently, about a quarter inch, then the drive rollers grab the tray reliably. I also painted the alignment arrowheads in a light color to make it easy to set the tray up.

Re - the Epson CD tray. I bought a couple on eBay a year ago. Works just fine.

Re - Epson head clogs. I used to have this problem and the only real fix was a new printer, but it only happened after several hundred DVDs. New solution (doh!). Turn off the printer at night. Not with a power strip but with the power button on the printer. I used to leave the printer on 24/7 and if I went a few days without using it the heads dried up. If you turn the printer off it parks the print heads on the cleaning pad. It's been a little over a year since I started turning off the printer at night and the images still look they are from a new printer.

Re - Black. Some print drivers let you select: "black ink only". But, surprise, it can't print black. Only shades of gray. Epson and probably most other inkjets use some color inks to print black.

Re - Multiple trips to get the next color ink.... Another DOH! moment? Only a Homer would wait until an ink cartridge is empty before buying a replacement. I always have at least one set of replacement cartridges on hand.

"What's a Homer?"
========================

It's a mild attempt at a personal insult.... he's trying to compare me to a cartoon character

I don't know who's being insult more, calling an international movie and TV hero a Canadian public employee,---gee, Homer is well respected, beer drinking employee at a Nuclear Power that threatens public and mental health in a daily way! ;-) I think Homer has a legal complaint, though, humors has it that Homer owns a Toshiba A1 for his SD TV from the 70's. ;-) It may be true that Blink3times postings creates reader melt downs, but then "blink3times" name is just big warning sign, ------ :-)
