OT: HD-DVD review--yawn

According to this reviewer, HD-DVD is nothing to get excited about, and has some problems such as a very long load time. He says the improvement is no big deal unless viewing on a large display, and is not comparable to the jump in quality going from VHS to DVD a decade ago.

BluRay and HD-DVD could turn out to be flops; at this point it looks that way to me. But then I have a bias--please, somebody, just give me a DVD standard that allows for WMV or 264 decoders and I'll be happy.

Divx has already a HD option, and I'm sure given the huge cost of setting up for the mainstream tecnologies, that alternative options will come through, that the average consumer will adopt. They are not going to fork out for more consumables after just getting themselves rigged out for DVD.
The end result will be governed by two factors ; 1- Cost ; 2- Will it be a deal better than what they already have got.

Of the two reviews that I read the quality was outstanding and the standard DVD's looked better also through the HD-DVD machine. (Toshiba $500.00) The main problems were the 20 second boot time, crappy remote, and the DTS sound being 10 db down. The standard setting for black levels produces not so deep black but the software can adjust them. Some models that have not been firmware upgraded would suddenly stop and restart for no reason. The 10 db sound being traced to the mixing on the HD-DVD disc itself (Brand).

noone should of assumed it would of been as a big difference between VHS & DVD.

But, they will just replace DVD players with HD disc players, just like they are replacing VHS with DVD & SD-TV's with HDTV's.

it's backwards compatible so it's not like we'll have a choice. :)
