ot: hdmi out nikon d700?

has anybody used the camera for video?

i know it doesn't shoot video, but i was wondering if i connect it up to a hdmi recorder whether i can use it as a simple camera and feed the signal to the recorder?

can anyone see any problems with this?

i'd give it a whirl myself but i don't have a mini hdmi connector.

Potentially what comes out the HDMI port. On most DSLRs it's a clone of what's on the LCD screen.

but if i can simply send out 'picture' without the blurb / data on screen, what am i getting?

i ask because maybe i can use the camera as a 'simple' b-roll ?

That I do not know, sorry.
Doesn't the manual give you a hint? Failing that if / when you're down here we could quickly hook it up to a monitor and have a look see.

There does not seem to be any way to display the D700 image via HDMI without the shooting information at the bottom of the screen. You can't get full screen 1080 output.

do you know what would happen if i use it in live view mode?

If the D700 is the same as the D7000, then you need to be in live view to get HDMI out. You can press the Info button to change info displayed on the back of the camera, but it doesn't affect what comes out of HDMI.

I connected to my TV to test. Can't you do that?

The feed from the D700 isn't particularly "clean", since it holds the same stats and infos from your LCD screen, and that its framerate isn't really meant to be captured onto a stream.

If you want to capture a good, clean HDMI stream however, I'd recommend the new D800 or D4. They are the first DSLR:s that are actually built to have a capturable, clean uncompressed HDMI stream out.

Not only does the HDMI out have the info, the image only takes up about 0.8 of the frame, with info underneath and to the right.

i knew when i bought the d700 that it didn't have any video capabilities by default. what i needed, and still need, is a fx dslr (that'll take my existing nikon primes) for shooting art work for magazine / book publication.

i'm not in the least interested, per se, in using a dslr for video - but since i had it i was simply wondering.

more than likely i'll pick up a s/h d90 for a walk around camera and perhaps b-roll - unless anyone knows any other video enabled (cheap!) dslr that'll take nikon f mount lenses?
