Here at Sundance Film Fest, been hanging out with Jody Eldredge who is a second camera unit director for the show J.A.G. He's got awesome footage taken from a Huey gunship that he shot for J.A.G. They are intercutting it with both 35mm and F900 footage. We compared his F900 footage to my 700 footage, and both of those to the HVR-Z1, and it was pretty heartening to see a full time, top of the industry camera guy finding the same results as I've found with the Z1 and the higher grade cams. He's extensively tested and blown up the Z1, tried to break the camera, and his footage is inspiring as can be imagined. No, he's not a paid Sony schill, he's here on his own nickle.
His helicopter footage is very interesting, because people that don't understand how the cam works keep claiming there are motion artifacts. This footage was shot hand-held in a fast moving helicopter, with lots of horizontal and vertical information, no lighting at all, lotsa detail right to the point you can see the stamps on the ammunition harness and see scratches in the gunsight on the 55cal machine gun. No motion artifacts, no loss of detail using a steady shot setting of 2 on the cam. Simply stunning. I'll ask if I can post some of the footage, but I'd be surprised if they'll allow it.
You can watch the episode of J.A.G. that has the HDV footage in it on the third week of February.
