I know there are a few articles on the web about making a mic boom yourself
and saving alot of money. I thought I would put my 2 cents in.
The key part was an adapter that allows a standard painter's pole with an Ajax
thread to be used with common 1/2" PVC pipe connectors. The http://www.buddipole.com/centeead.htmlblack adapter[/link]
can be had for $6.50 plus shipping.
The PVC connector is a 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 1/2" tee found at most hardware/plumbing
shops.
Four 1 1/2" x 1 5/16" x 3/32" #25 O-Rings (2 on each end) form a "#" that the mic
slips into, again at the hardware shop.
If anyone is interested in more details, send a message to my username above.
Was less than $30 including fiberglass pole and works/sounds great!
EDIT: Home Depot has a light bulb changing kit with pole that is quiet too but is
more expensive http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100013250&N=10000003+90401+502633&marketID=401&locStoreNum=8125 Bayco Light Bulb Changer Kit - Model LBC-1600[/link]
UPDATE: R0DE VIDEOMIC
I was asked about the Rode VideoMic. I don't own one, but their unit will accept a 1/4" 20
thread bolt (1 1/4" long). The black adapter is still a good choice to use.
Drill a hole in the adapter so the bolt slips in. I would then make a paper
funnel and pour some epoxy into the adapter just enough to almost cover the
head of the bolt. Let it harden overnight. The funnel is so that you don't get
the epoxy on the internal threads.
