OT - How did dey do dat?

During the current cricket test match from Birmingham, UK, they have been digitally superimposing occasional captions onto the grass during a wide shot.

Nothing out of the ordinary there, BUT, when a player walked across where the lettering was, he was in front of the lettering, making it appear the lettering really was on the grass, even though it wasn't.

Anyone know how?

Probably the same software they use to put the lines on the football field - it pans with the pans of the cams, and if they switch cams - it stays in the same place.... on the field.

If so - it's basically a truck that is one big computer processing all the information from all the cameras, and interperting it into a 3D model and placing the text/line/graphic/whatever in the specific place and moving it with the movement of the cameras etc...

Yes, this is a very special live 3D compositing system. Also used for swim WM and many other kind of live broadcast sport events.

Orad is the company which is well known for its live 3D systems. Take a look here:

Ideal scenario for one of the wickets - Warne cops one in the box and collapses on his stumps.

Maybe 30 mins ....

Peter!?!? This is a side of you I didn't think you had? I'm truly shocked by your response ! ! ! How very awful [ total LOL! !!! ! ] !

What do you think our ex-colonial US cousins make of your, "Warne "

30 mins eh? We need to go shopping .. hope it will be quicker. Mind you Warne-ie will be cheeky enough to "drag" it out as far as he can.

- dunno what they'd make of that - but it's good to keep the forum multilingual ;)

This Ashes series works out great here in Perth - starts 5.30 late afternoon and goes through to One o'clock - I've just had a couple of tinnies to warm up ....

I'm stumped.

What a relief - I really thought the Aussies had done it, and good luck to them - the fact is that England (almost) lost it by the inept batting of Strauss, Trescothick and Vaughan in the second innings - they should have set at least 400 to win. Anyway - on to Old Trafford ....

Multilingual only works if you provide a link to a translation site :-)
