You can mount the burner into an enclosure such as an ADS Pyro ($100, maybe less) and then connect the box to your laptop via firewire or USB2. USB1 is far too slow to do video. You can get a PCMCIA card for your laptop with either (or even both) of these interfaces ($50). I'd recommend firewire.

You really don't want to try running an external burner via USB 1.1. Firewire is faster and better, having the advantage of being able to connect 1394 HDs to your laptop for video storage and editing. I've edited from firewire drives for a long time with nary a hitch, other than a defective Maxtor 1394 enclosure.

Thanks guys. I was a bit unclear there. I also have the Firewire built in and will now use it to connect the DVD.
