OT: How to ftp to SCS?

TeetimeNC wrote on 10/15/2008, 5:35 PM
Well, not entirely OT but I am trying to ftp some files to SCS support. They sent me the url to their ftp site. But when I click on it my PC launches WS-FTP Pro, rather than using the ftp client in IE 7. I need to be able to access the site through IE.

Can anyone tell me, short of uninstalling WS-FTP Pro, how to keep it from launching when I click an ftp url in IE?

While I am confused by why it has to be IE, you should be able to copy and paste the URL into the browser.

If you are going to be doing a lot, go to explorer and to folder options and check the association for URL:File Transfer Protocol

Before trying to upload again, try deleting the IE cache, including the offline files (although I don't think IE7 has that as a separate option anymore).

I usually use WS-FTP for accessing their ftp server. It works very well. I never use the ftp client in browsers for anything at all.

How about simply copying the URL and pasting it in IE? It should be of the format:

ftp://user@site.com/

You should be prompted for a password.

You can even do:

ftp://user:password@site.com/

Copy and paste that into notepad or something to hang onto what you've typed in case you made a mistake. Your browser will likely strip out the password part.
Also, if you paste it into notepad, you can see if you accidentally left a space onto the end.

(This is obviously a low security way of doing things. Which may be fine for your purposes, or not.)

Thanks all. There may have been a problem with the SCS ftp site last evening. I tried again now with WS-FTP and was able to connect no problem. Since I wasn't able to connect last night I and since their instructions were for using a web browser, I thought that might be my only way to connect. It is still a bit disturbing that I can't figure a way to disable the automatic launch of WS-FTP pro when you invoke an ftp url in the browser.

Which app to launch for the ftp protocol is configuration information that is tucked away in the Windows registry. It must have been configured by WS_FTP during installation. If you don't want to uninstall it, you could look through the app's preferences/configuration to see if it allows you to restore the FTP protocol settings in Windows. If it does not, hacking the registry is the last resort (always dangerous).
