doesn't the manual say that? Unless you mean non-supported stuff. Then using google is wildly easy. Even though the DCMA forbids it, there's TON'S of sites of hacking consoles, from getting streaming video from your PC to using the HD for other purposes.

http://www.redkawa.com/

contains easy-to-use converters & software to encode for the PS3 & get video streaming from your PC to PS3

EDIT: I've never used the PS3 stuff but used the Wii stuff & it worked near-perfect (needed to change something to get video to run on Wii, the defaults were slightly wrong).

I'm going to have to get SOMETHING so that I can continue with my HD video editing. I will TRY and hold out for the BD50... but if this $299 PS3 sale comes to Canada, I may end up owning a Ga..... a GAM.... a GAME CO.... a CONSOLE FOR GA..... Yuk.... I can't even say it ;)

I will say that M2T play back is a hell of an incentive.... pretty bloody convenient.

Blink - it's only a games console if you want it to be. A playstation can be used to play media other than games. IF you only use it to play back BD content, then to you it's a BD player, not a games machine.

Afterall, this PC is very able at playing games, but for now it's an audio mastering station, or tonight it's a video editing workstation etc

Be glad it's in $ more or less what it is in £ here :(

Just hide the game controllers. Unfortunately you can't get rid of them because system updates need to be done with a game controller and not the AV style remote.

Gaming aside, the PS3 is the finest media playback device ever made. Just make sure you get the latest firmware update.

It will even play back Bluray's made from the V8.0b timeline.

One of the manuals that came with it has online links to the real manuals. My normal WEB surfing PC just had a USB short that took out my motherboard, so I can't get the link right now.

I have one of the older DVI Sony HD TVs, so I had trouble setting mine up initially, finally got it working with HDMI-DVI cable. Audio is optical into my Sony 5.1 surround, so since it is not HDMI audio, there was another option I had to change also.

We were at the Sony outlet store yesterday, they had Surf's Up playing, so my son really wanted it and we watched it on my setup last night. My 65" 1080i CRT rear projection HDMI to DVI blew away everything they had in the Sony store, including the 70" flatscreen.

I haven't done streaming yet, but i just upgraded my 4-port wired network to 8-port and will be hooking it up hardwired, should be faster than the wireless.

Yeah Blink, and Sonic the Hedgehog never looked better!!
Plus chicks love a guy with a game console sitting by their tv.

All to see some HD edits? Can I ask "why" it's so necessary to spend the $300+ to view your HD on your game consoles? Isn't the monitoring setup on your systems enough?

Xbox/PS3...both look uggin fugly unless hidden.

Just kiddin' around, enjoy the box! Does that thing play asteroids or pong? Because those are the only games that matter (still).

* I still think Intellivision kicks these new fangled systems rears (more gameplay in the games). The disc and numberpad controller rules!!

>>I bought one yesterday and Across the Universe to go with it. It came with Spiderman 3.

A video editors dream and better than Spidey 3, that's for sure. But my greatest concern is the possibility now that John Lennon may come back from the dead and run amok to eat (what's left of) the brains of the living if he ever catches "Across the Universe".

Somehow, all that "peace and love" goes out the window when you come back from the dead for retribution.

Damn zombies!

All the chicks I know say "OMG! You got a Wii! Can we play!?". :D

anyway... at $300 it's tempting. If I wasn't going for a house right now, I'd love one. Mainly just for movies, but that resistance: fall of man looked pretty good (WW2, but vs aliens, nice change to the formula). Besides that... :/

But just don't get the firmware updates. If you only want it for a BD player, make sure you can play burned discs & skip them. I wouldn't risk them making a change that eliminates you being able to stream video, run off cards/USB/etc.

Does the PS3 get the 'net? I don't know about anyone else, but my favorite part of the Wii is the news channel: all the top stories from the AP in nice to use categories, all sorted. I love it (it's like a virtual news paper, but you don't need to filter through adds/commercials/etc like online).

Damn zombies!

I know some good zombie games for PC & Wii (well, RE: Umbrella chronicles) if you're interested. Most of the ones on the PC are free. Very fun imho!

Lol... I'll be sure and tell that to the wife!

((yes, either through ethernet (no config) or wireless))

((I cant wait for Resident Evil 5.... I bought a Gamecube for RE4 and Metroid, but RE5 looks incredible..
One thin i never understood was why they didnt stick to the original plot in the movies... they ruined a perfectly good franchise...

As for other games.. i just got Burnout Paradise..My god this thing is incredible... and you can now find some good cheap games s/h

as for Resistance, i agree, its pretty cool.. very standard FPS stuff though... Ghost Rekon is bloosy awesome.. bit flaky with the framerate sometimes, but where else can u take out a a fully loaded chopper and watch (and lsiten to it) it in HD glory and its obliterated out of the sky... friggin awesome...

as for HD stuff, well, pearl harbour will just blow you away. Im looking forward to seeing Troy on it. Im nota spidy movie fan, but my 4 yr old loves it and he is just totally wrapped in it when its on.
Were using a Samsung 46' 25000:1 contrast 1920x1080 HD panel.
The laptop running Doom 3 at 60hz looks so incredible, its not funny.. games like Homeworld 2 and some other space combat sims have a new life with tese kind of panels...

as a side note, i only play games when im rendering.. lol
but to be honet, the display is jsut as important as the content.

In a word, no. Sitting at your desk with high-res, but smallish monitors is different from sitting on the couch with a large-screen HDTV. It is a different viewing experience, different acoustics, puts you in a different frame of mind, and I find that I notice different things about the video.

I second that wholeheartedly! A prime example is hand held shots. I've watched hand held shots on my desktop monitor that looked acceptable and thought "yay, no deshaking necessary." Then I've watched the same shots on the 52" and had to reach for the Dramamine!

Bingo - and likewise, listening to 5.1 in a screening room (flat front array) can be different than the studio (ITU775 array)

I just did that with a director and got hired to do a full slate of films - both score and sound design.
