What happened was it changed ALL (and I do mean all) my media file associations to Nero--without asking! I wasn't sure where to go change them all back, but I found it.
Now I'll have to go back and read the thread you provided.
I installed Nero 7 about 2 weeks ago and when I installed I had the option to uncheck all the file associations that it wanted to switch to Nero. I do recall this being kind of hidden, but it is there. By hidden I mean that you had to press a button during install on the installer that allowed you to see the file associations.
I also found Nero 7 to be completely unstable until I installed the latest patch, that fixed the stability problems. I am not keen on the new interface but I am working in the Nero Burning ROM interface now and all is again familiar.
I have found the Nero Player to be far superior to Power DVD or WIN DVD in terms of playback quality for DVDs.
John, I have to be honest, it was just a knee-jerk reaction to marketing. When I bought Nero 6, it was a little prior to the release of v7. They notified me of a free upgrade. I bit!
Nero 7 is supposed to have much better support for dual-layer DVDs. Nero 7 also has better backup options similar but better than Ghost or Drive Image - auto spanning of DVDs etc.. I haven't had time to verify any of these claims as of yet.
Yeah me too ...still on 6
i think I will finish burning my 2 ,50 copy disc projects first then see if the upgrade is worth while.
First time Nero Burning vs DVDA so I want to at least get the process down.
I pulled the trigger at Thanks Giving because Best Buy had the full Nero 7 Ultra retail product for $20. Even though I already owned Nero 6 Ultra, the upgrade price was to be either $40 or $50. Couldn't go wrong at $20.
Yeah, I wish I would have got that deal. I bought the upgrade as all I had was the SE edition of Nero that came with my Sony Burner and I have been using that for the longest, so when I got the upgrade email, I bit as well. I can't say that I really use all the features, but it sure is nice to be able to use my other burners with the Nero software now.

This thread doesn't exactly make me want to upgrade, and I didn't even know there was a Nero 7 (I'm using Nero 6).
What are the reasons any of you decided to upgrade?
=================================================
Yeah, a few weeks ago I was ready to hit the buy button but decided to check out the user groups and reviews. I quickly changed my mind about buying it. 6 is good though, I'm sticking with it for awhile.
Now, I upgrade NOTHING, unless the house is burning down.
The vast majority of feature upgrades in the several dozen programs I use regularly are just bloat, or bolted-on features purchased from another company and poorly integrated into the main program.
The backup/burning/authoring conglomerates are great examples: Roxio, Nero, Sonic, and even Sony.. They have great programs but -- wrongly, in my estimation -- they all decided that, to be competitive, they needed to add some features they saw in other programs. Rather than have their engineers actually create the code, they went out and purchased code and "bolted it on" to their existing programs. The result was something that usually takes five times the disk space of the original program; doesn't really follow any of the existing user interface conventions; is buggy as heck because the engineers really don't understand the code and the company from which they purchased the code no longer cooperates, etc.
The Sony Media Manager is a great example. How large and buggy is this non-Sony-designed turkey? Even the MainConcept codec, which is a wonderful and tight piece of code, has never been well-integrated. Ever wonder why there is no two-pass encoding in DVDA? Or why the Vegas UI exposes dozens of arcane controls that none of you have ever touched or know what they do? Despite all these useless controls, the encoder UI doesn't even provide a simple built-in bitrate calculator.
When I switched to Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge 4.5 I was amazed that it actually worked, did what I wanted it too, and if I made a mistake it didn't holler back. The same with Vegas 3.0. The same with the noise reduction pluggin. Kind of reminded me of the old Western/Electric Bell Labs stuff that lasted for 20+ years weather you wanted it too or not. Even their shipping crates were superior, everybody stole the wood crates to build their houses and garages. The straightest 2 x 4's I have ever seen.
