OT: Internet Monthly/Daily usage meter?

Grazie wrote on 6/14/2006, 4:30 AM
In an attempt to get an intelligent decision as to what Internet Service provider package I want to choose - BT has a very "cute" way of openly NOT being able to tell me what I want to know - I wish to get a handle on just how much/little I do use.

So, here is the question, can anybody recommend a simple freeware package that will do this daily/monthly Internet Usage compiler/counter work?

Thanks

Grazie

There are some packages that employers use to track their employees' use of the Internet. The cost is based on a per user basis.

Is this what you're looking for?

if your computer is on all the time, you cna use the reading from your blinly network icon in the lower right & use something like this ( http://www.edoceo.com/utilis/bandwidth-calculator.php ) to convert it to another format. Then you'd have an idea.

Well it won't help you Grazie, but here Bigpond provide the free software that displays usage and updates the data more or less continuously. So there is a bar dispaly on the desktop, they send email as you pass milestones (eg 50%, 80%, 100% of allowance paid for). And you can see details at a click. So works very well.
This is Telstra -- don't your providers have anything similar?

Nearly Jay. What I really I want to see is a daily/monthly summation of GBs. Meaning: Today I've used 2mbs . . . . in this month so far I've used 2gbs. That kinda thing?

Happy? This is me you're talking about? Mr IT? . . and yes that would be good idea, but I just want something I can set loose and just keep adding up my Gb usage - yes?

Serena - nope! They did about 5 years ago - but not now. Funny that ;-)

Anyways, here's one:

Down here the download limits are so high it's rather academic.

If you're using a router most of them maintain cumulative packet data, just need to find a user friendly way to display it, there might even be soemthing in the router itself to do it for you.

Just go to your ISP website and look at your account. They keep a second by second tab on your usage.

Grazie,

I use Netmeter, it is free and does what you asked for. You can see the totals by day, week, and month.

MARK! You bleedin' STARMAN!!

That is exactly what I was after. One smart piece of software. It even produces Spreadsheet tables and I can give warnings and makes running totals as I'm working! Excellent!

'ell, there's some clever people out there!!!

Grazie,

I've only been using it a couple of months, but haven't had any issues. It seems a nice little piece of software.

Yo Grazie -

Would you be kind enough to explain what you want and why it matters? (I'm not being snide here - I honestly don't know).
Me? I just pay a hundred bucks a year and have a website.
So what are you trying to measure, and why?

All in the interest of academic curiousity.

thanks,

"Me? I just pay a hundred bucks a year and have a website."

Vic - nice DVD by the way, you should ALL rush out and purchase it immediately!! - if I too was paying $100pa I wouldn't be investigating.

But, but, but, . . at present I'm paying equiv $130.00 per QUARTER! This for 2mb/sec and a 20Gbs/month ceiling.

PLUS!!!

My provider can't tell me just how much usage I do DO - but WILL put me up to a higher tariff IF I use too much!!

Soooo... on the one hand they can't inform me what I am using BUT and on the other hand they DO know if I should over step my usage. Cute! So, as a customer I can't make an informed customer decision as to which tariff I want.

Anyways, this I don't like. I don;t like paying for something I may NOT be needing and I don't like NOT being able to make an informed Customer decision. I bet you are the same.

Soooo.... Now that I have my OWN way of telling how much usage I do do, I can then gauge what package I wish to buy - they have several - OR if I wish to stay with my present supplier or not.

Vic, now you know. I think?

At least here in the UK, there are many ISPs with different broadband prices, some of which have limits on the amount of data you can download/upload. And only some ISPs track how much data you download/upload.

I'm currently on an unlimited package, and my ISP doesn't provide info on my usage. I could switch to a cheaper package with a limit (e.g. 10GB per month max)... but before doing that I would need to know how much I typically use today. That's why I use this... from Grazie's question I think it is the same for him.

Thanks Mark! That's exactly my point.

I hope Vic doesn't think I'm been a miserable, miserly, grumpy, middle aged, not-good-for-doing-anything-else time filling geezah? He CAN'T be thinking that . .surely . . ?

See? $100 bux is just such levelling experience!! Mind you, we do have free health care! Ah-HUH!! My thumb with its 2 week paranicia ( as us professionals say ) is testament to that! Oh yes . . .

What I will add, is that BT have several tariffs. Each have a ceiling of usage. It ranges from a mild 2gbs per month up to 6gbs per month. Then onwards to various usage options.

"Mind you, we do have free health care!"

Not to mention fuel at 97p per litre ($8.26 per gallon)
Cigarettes at £4.50 ($8.48) pack of 20
1 Litre Bacardi at £15.00 ($28.27)

plus 40% income tax!

Last time I was in France they were advertising 10 mb Broadband for £8.00 per month.

Alan, in the U.S., when you take all taxes and fees (Federal, state, local, etc.) into consideration, the average American is paying a tad over 56 cents out of every dollar he earns. So for the first six months out of every year, we're working for the government, in one form or another.

The American Revolution started over an outrageous 2 percent tax! Go figure.

Here's my ISP...
www.fatcow.com

Would you check it out and let me know what I'm missing?

I get a gig of space and don't understand the other issues, since I've never been hit with an overage.

I guess your site is way busier than mine, but how? and why?

Basic education needed here.

Thanx in advance,

Vic, you already know about storage. Usually there are two commonly use measurements( this example if for websites client uploads):
1.) transmission per sec(upload), bandwidth, like how many users can be uploading at one time, ie, 125k/s upload limit per sec.
2.) Then, this is most ISPs favorite, total about of uploads( number of bytes upload) each month, ie, liking having a 25g bandwidth, means if your site uploads more than 25 gigbytes in a month to visitors, you paid more.

Vic, that is a Website Server/Service provider's charges.

What I'm speaking of is purely an average Joe's usage on the Internet. No website, no server options no NOTHING! This is me using the Internet and my standing charges from BT. And that, Vic, equates to - what did I say? - $130/QTR!!

Now the question I should be asking you, Vic, is do you in any way get charged separately for USING the Internet, as "Vic"? Not as Vic the owner of a website, but do you in the States get charged by your line/cable people for usage?
