Testing for speed on the Internet is kind of inconsistent depending on a lot of factors, like how your packets get routed and Internet traffic loads at that moment, but the most informative benchmark I have found is here:

University of California - Santa Cruz - Network Diagnostic Tool

It also has some links to other testing sites.

Surprisingly, cable seems to outdo DSL for speed and price in lots of cases. In my area for $29/month you can get 2Mbps down / 384K up. A comparable DSL package would be nearly $100. $30/month for DSL gets you about 128K both ways.

My cousin has Verizon FIOS. Man, i want that! $32/month for 4Mbps down / 3Mbps up. Probably won't be available in my area until 2053 or so. *pout*
