OT: INTO GREAT SILENCE - Beautiful

For those who enjoy documentaries, I highly recommend Philip Gröning’s Into Great Silence. Watched on DVD last night. Stunning!

You can read more about the film here.

Gröning warns that this doc does not provide information; it's "an experience." This film is not for everyone. If you are one of those who is afraid to be alone with his own thoughts for more than a minute or two, stay away from this movie. You could hurt yourself.

I'm tried to see that one night.

on the way to the theater, my wife confessed she wasn't feeling great and wasn't up for the movie, so we just went to dinner.

I was hoping to see it in the theater, because at home, I'm too much of a multitasker to get into the rythym of the movie.

I'll try to track down a copy to watch.

One of the highlights of this past year for me took place while I was doing one of my tours with the local children's choir I record. We were in France for two weeks in July and on this particular day the kids were to perform at a Mass in the magnificent church on the peak of Mont Saint-Michel. Once a tidal island (an island during high tides), it is now connected to the mainland by a narrow road, though plans are afoot to remove the roadway, making it an island once again.

Anyway, once on the island you trudge up narrow cobblestone streets until you finally reach the church at the top. The kids sang well during the service, but what really blew me away was the chant sung by the monks during the service. The beauty of their voices, their demeanor, and the unusual locale all combined to transport the listener into an entirely different space.

I suspect this documentary will have a similar effect.
