Good on you Bob, that says just about everything.

... mind you, imagine how good it'd be to watch the end of civilisation on an ipad.

I'll second CourseDesign's nomination of Bob's comment.

Aside from doing production and PR work, I'm a local "technology commentator" (hate the monicker, but it's not a bad gig." My schtick has more or less become being "the technology guy who doesn't like technology." Or more aptly, I'm not an early adopter. My mantra all the time is to ask, "What problem does this solve?"

I'm not cool enough, or dumb enough to buy into the hype. And in my life, these aren't problems that actually need a solution. ;-)

Where do you get your stats? iPhone isn't even in the top 2 among smartphones.

It doesn't have to be on even the Top 100 list in terms of number of phones in use to be #1 in traffic.

The biggest difference between the iPhones and other smartphones is that the iPhones are so much better for web surfing (much better UI, significantly faster 3G network, can surf while talking on the phone), so people use them much more heavily.

Here's the scoop with real numbers:

iPhone Has Biggest Share of Smartphone Traffic

From AdMob

Funny, didn't Apple buy Admob a couple of months ago.... which means they were talking for least 6 months. Apple brought Admod for a new and improve method of placing ads on mobile devices, esp Apple mobiles in the near future. The fact is RIM moves more email and general data that Apple. Choosing one month count, especially when RIM was having server issues that month is a very selective analyses with little meaning.

Similar results from other sources and other months later in the year too.

RIM has had many server outages, hard to avoid :O), but I don't think BB e-mail carries that many bytes.

Are you going to send high res photos and video for viewing on that ant-sized screen?

"Are you going to send high res photos and video for viewing on that ant-sized screen?" ;-) well, let's remember, only recently has iphone permitted sending pics thru text messaging ..... due to concern about data load and more important, battery life. ;-) and it's well know that S.F. and NY city has poor iphone service. But the 3G iphones due a lot better on the power management issue concerning the transmitter. And as always, the screen is great..... but better on the iPod touch(no $30/month data fee for poor performance) ;-)

>>>>Are you going to send high res photos and video for viewing on that ant-sized screen?<<<<

As opposed to what? iPhones cockroach testicle sized screen.
For web browsing, images, video any phone is crap. It's just that people have nothing better to do, so they waste time with this nonsense. Doing anything on the iPhone ( or any phone ), games, watching videos, images is like eating $hit when you can have real food but are just to lazy and impatient to wait until you get home. What the %$^ is so urgent or special that it has to be watched or played while you are out? Another cat playing a piano? Another photo of your kid doing something you probably should be witnessing in person instead on your iPhone?

It's pathetic really.

Well... pathetic sounds a little bit harsh for a $50B company. As for the iPhone, it is true that it accounts for about 1% of cell phone sales, but returns about 20% of total industry profits. Sounds to me that Mr. Jobs has identified and taps into the target market quite well.

Throw in the blackberry, and we have 5% of industry sales and 58% of industry profits.

Not only bad - competition from TomTom, Apple's Iphone and Google's Android forced Nokia to introduce free mobile navigation just some weeks ago. Saves one a nice bit of money to update maps etc.

Reading through some of the online reviews after the introduction of the Ipad indicate that this will put pressure on prices of mini notebooks .. so in the end some of us will benefit from this new Apple toy .

I ran my business on an iPhone while on a 2-week trip. I received faxes, processed credit card orders, approved footage, accessed my knowledge database (Evernote, highly recommended), and much much more.

No lolcats for me, I was too busy enjoying the scenery for that (driving Highway 5 from LA to Vancouver, Highway 101 -> Highway 1 going back).

I think the value of the iPad will be in the apps built specifically for it.

Control surfaces that cost less than a Mackie MCU and have much more versatility with color grading balls one minute and 100 mm sliders the next, Electronic View Finder for video cameras (just like the iPhone does for pro Canon and Nikon DSLRs now), production slates.

And one use doesn't need any extra apps: sitting at a small table in a cafe, reading the news on the web.
Notebook keyboards fill up the table (and the keyboard with coffee...) and the netbooks I have seen so far have really crappy screens that are quite unpleasant to read (and their keyboards are still in the way).

There are some notebook tablets that weigh about 3-4 times as much as the iPad. They have reasonable screens (although bigger), and the keyboard is folded under, but you pay about 3x as much as for the iPad.

We'll just have to wait and see. If I had to bet money, I would bet on it doing well, although really well only after the next version comes out with a camera.
