OT: Is AMD 8 core worth considering?

The premium to upgrade to current tech on the Intel side of the fence has my bank account convulsing at a full hardware upgrade from my current 3 year old Q9400/8GB system.

The cost of upgrading to 16GB of DDR2 ram is alone over $300, while 16GB of current tech RAM is less that $130 according to NewEgg.

I'm having to weight the pro's and cons of each brand. I can dive headlong into AMD and get a smoking 8 core setup for over half the price of an equal Intel setup.

My concern is what am I sacrificing if I go the AMD route? I'd like to hear some intelligent advice on the pro's and con's of AMD.

You'd have to look at benchmarks but, with the current generations of CPU's, AMD is a little slower then Intel. Normally it's a better bang-for-the-buck though.

I've had AMD's the last several upgrades (XP 1800, X2 & Phenom), I have nothing but good experiences with them.
