OT: Is there a 'Exempt' US DVD rating?

I've been trying to find out about US DVD ratings for ages. Is it obligatory to have a rating on a US DVD, and if so, is there a Exempt category like in the UK for music, sports and educational DVDs?

Maybe the difference between here and the UK is that the US rating system is voluntary, so "exempt" doesn't really apply. You could leave the rating off or you could give it an NR or UR rating.
