OT-ish!: 2 Monitor Setup? Setup Shortcut?

Grazie wrote on 5/15/2003, 4:31 AM
Hiyah!

I've just purchased a Sony 15" TFT. Good price! - Now, when I boot up I'm having to go to Settings>Display>Monitors etc etc, to start my V4 sessions, everytime to set up my Sony as No.2 monitor. This is a real pain.

Is there a way I can have my laptop jump this process and give me the configuration I want from the outset, without having to do the Settings 2-Step?

I've cut down the process a bit by having the "Display" icon on my Desktop as a shortcut, but I haven't fathomed a way to get what I want.

HELP!!

Grazie

What version of Windows are you working with?

My Windows XP Pro keeps everything the way i set it up across system boots and sleeps, including where the VV and DVDa main and detached windows are placed. I use a Matrox G450 dual-head with identical CRTs.

well laptop may handle the dual head configuration differently, what video card is it? do you want to set up 2 display or just having the laptop displayed on the LCD only?

You got it - way2slo.

One laptop; One external TFT; WinME - I would like to have the laptop screen "up" and the Sony external screen to share the work.

You may have to tweak your BIOS settings. Having not done it before, I think a laptop handles 2 monitors different than a desktop. My desktop also retains the last settings (ie. both monitors active) on shut down. It's not OS specific (after Win98).

NExt time you boot - go into your bios to see if there is a tweak for your monitor settings.

I think it matters most what kind of any software comes with your video card. I have a Maxtor dual head too. It comes with QuickDesk, where you can save window positions, have a vitural desktop over multiple monitors and so on. Try going to Control Pannel, Display probably under the Advanced tab and see what if anything your video card supports as an option.

It sounds like the profile didn't take. Did you ever specify which monitor is 1 and which is 2 and what resolution and so on each so take? You probably need to hit the apply button before any changes take if you did that and nothing happens.

"You may have to tweak your BIOS settings." - Don't think I've got an option here.

BillyBoy

"I think it matters most what kind of any software comes with your video card. - I'll look into this.

"QuickDesk" Where he be?

"Advanced tab" Yup been here several times to set things like resolution; Screen1 & Screen2.

Screen1 = laptop to the right
Screen2 = SONY to the left

" . . see what if anything your video card supports as an option." - BB, not sure what you mean? Do you mean the graphic drivers? Do you mean the type of multi-monitor s/w to do this job? Specifically what exactly?

"It sounds like the profile didn't take." - Absolutely! - That's exactly the position I'm in. What's fascinating though, is that when I boot up AND I have the SONY connected and powered up, the SONY momentarily takes it proper postion in the "array" AND the mouse cursor can be briefly moved over to this "lefthand" monitor AND then it goes off-line until I do the "Setup-2Step" to bring it back into use - ...hmmm.

"Did you ever specify which monitor is 1 and which is 2 and what resolution and so on each so take? . . . . . ." - Yes, I did the stuff you mention. Hit "Apply" etc etc - otherwise I wouldn't have got anything at all. Laptop=Monitor1; Sony=Monitor2. It's as if the default for this multi-monitor screens option "sets-up" the Laptop both as Monitor1 AND the one on the left - needing me to physically move and reset the resolution of Monitor2, to get Monitor2 [ SONY ] "moved" to the left - yeah?

BB, please qualify sentence, as you may be onto something - "You probably need to hit the apply button before any changes take - What exactly?

Thanks Guys,

I look forward to your replies,

Grazie

1) Lose WinME...worst invention since quiche
2) http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/ Best invention since dual-head video cards ;)

Oh yeah...definately get rid of WinME.

I protest! Good quiche is like a souffle. It can flop unless you're a pretty good cook. One of my hobbies, also why I'm too fat and now... hungry.

Protest noted. Quiche is better than WinME, I won't argue that at all ;)
