OT-ish: Wish for MS-ACCESS Database for Logging . . .

Caruso, I am using Access XP, and it should also open in Access 2000 I think you are a version behind unfortunatelly.
Tell you what guys, if this database becomes something that people will like to use, I can make the final version web ready and host it as a public website.

At least two versions behind.

I use this version in my "other" life extensively. It does exactly what I need it to do, and, when Access 97 streamlined the program of some of the features I really relied upon, I stopped upgrading.

Unfortunately, later versions of Access are not backwards compatible. Even Access 97 is not compatible with version 2.0. Too bad, but, I understand, really.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd put my hand up for this being an Access programmer but I'm already titally swamped with DBMS development, mastering DVDs, mastering CDs and oh yeah did I mention getting some sleep.

But I'm more than willing to throw some advice / ideas into the fire.

Just be warned, this could be more complex than it seems.
See me previous post on how to handle T/C. You also really need a decent amount of data validation. e.g. end T/C must be greater than start T/C. Easy enough to do if the values are stored as absolute frames, not so easy if you just store a string that anything can get typed into.

Hey, farss (or anyone else interested in tackling this)

If it helps, I can send you a Perl file that converts Canopus Rex Navigator files into delimited text. It was originally posted on the Canopus forums. I don't believe the source code is copyrighted... maybe it will give you some ideas.

Don't want to add to your workload... let me know if you want me to e-mail the file to you.

I'm not glad to see others having T/C problems and data entry validation issues - but it does seem to be a bit of problem . . . .

Rafalk thanks for hanging in there with me.

Grazie:

Just discovered your thread now...

Did you ever get things worked out with Access?

Did you go another route?

I do a lot of Access programming at work (ITT) and could maybe answer some questions, if you still have any.

KW - Rafalk is on the case, and has already made available his VideoHelper ACCESS front end - with 2 relational tables - neat. Maybe you could talk with Rafalk directly and combine your prodigious ACCESS db knowledge - yeah?

Grazie

BStanding:

I'm with you 100% on this one - this would be a beautiful thing, unfortunately, from what I understand, the .sfvidcap files are not "open" or "available" for export/import. I've asked about this in the past (maybe we've even had a "discussion" about it ?), and SoFO/Sony techs have answered in this vein (negative). I'm about as far from being a programmer as one can be, however, and if someone could figure it out, it would be GREAT, since I've logged all my tapes this way.

Thanks RafalK for this bit of code you're willing to share...

If he had a question, (which he probably doesn't), I'll be here.

I do a LOT of technical data analysis for tens of thousands of items, so I do OK. My "specialty", if I have one, would be user interfaces and usability.

Not only do I want it to work 100% flawlessly, I want it to look nice too..

So, I'll be here... :)

Just to give this a bump and list a few things that would be useful to me. I'm sure some would only get in the way for some users but some might prove useful. Some of these, I gleened from catvid. Real cool but way too many fields I dont need.

Category
Sub Category
Length (calculated from TC start..TC end ???)
Number of segments (in this case "clip" would be a group of segments)
Comments
Changes (improvements) to raw footage
Camera:
Source camera
Wide angle ect
Settings
Audio
Just some Ideas
