... I was thinking of getting a hard case for my Sony VX2100. It's just for knocking about in the trunk and local travel - not really planning on taking it on planes or shipping it. Any recommendations? I was thinking a Pelican case or some such.
I have a Pelican case for my GL-1. Bought one big enough to hold the camera, a lot of tapes, extra batteries, filters, etc. I love it. It's rugged and waterproof.
I got mine from B & H and was happy with the price.
You could also look at the Kata bags. One model has a hard internal shell which gives lot of protection and you get lots of places for other bits and pieces. Pelican or Storm (bit lighter) are both good options as mentioned, advantage of these is you can padlock them but if you're not flying around then they maybe overkill.
Bob.
Try Lowes and search for Item #: 24981 Model: VGC-5200. It is an 18" Guard Force Heavy-Duty Aluminum Tool Case with removeable diced foam insert, moveable dividers, plus a tool holder. Cost is $24.94. I have three of them that I carry audio equipment in.
Home Depot has the same case for $19.97, but last time I looked it didn't have the removeable diced foam insert. If you can do without the diced foam the rest is exactly the same.
It is not worth the difference in the cost for Pelican or some other specialty case. IMO...............unless the car ends up off a bridge to Chappaquiddick Island. They aren't submersible.
If you often drop your case (especially into running rivers) DEFINITELY get the Pelican - it's marvelous.
If you have other things to do with the $100 to $300 bucks you'll save at Lowes - get the metal case - I've had one for years, and it goes out on every one of my gigs -
Doskocil is another brand that makes Pelican-like cases. They're a bit cheaper and a bit roomier than their Pelican counterparts. I use one for my PD-150, and with some careful arranging, still have room for mikes, battery chargers, WA lens, etc.
Completely waterproof and bombproof. B&H used to carry them, but I don't see them in the catalog anymore. I'm sure a bit of Googling will turn up a distributor.
