I use a Canon ZR-1000 on my VX2000. It works very well and is reasonably priced.
There are expensive alternatives such as the overpriced ZOE or the Varizoom but the differences are all in the placement and size etc of the controls.
Here is the problem. If you are trying to eliminate the little jump when you first press the zoom control NONE OF THEM AT ANY PRICE will completely eliminate it. That takes practice with the zoom controller. The Canon has a variable zoom setting which is what most people use.
A second less expensive alternative which isn't a bad option as long as you can try it out before you buy or return it without a hassle (often easier said than done) is to buy an inexpensive Sony tripod that comes with a remote zoom and throw away the tripod saving the zoom controller for the camera. I don't know what kinds of stores you have in the region where you live, but in NYC and it's surrounding area there are lots of places where you can try the tripod/zoom controllers out such as the Sony store outlets.
Sony also used to make a little LANC controller that clips onto a tripod handle, look around see if anyone still has them in stock, very cheap, RM-VD1 is the model number.
