Dave,

I've used Karen's Directory Printer. You can find it here:

For windows, start run, cmd to get to the command prompt.

To do the D: drive as an example:

at the C:\> prompt type

"dir D:\ /s >Yourfile.txt" {hit enter}

This will write the dir to the file name Yourfile.txt. Specify the name/location you want here.

Do a search on this forum for "WhereIsIt." Based on unanimous recommendations in several threads on this forum, starting with this one from John Cline:

CATALOGING HARD DRIVES

I purchased this program and logged all my external USB and bare SATA drives. I can now search across 10 TB of offline storage and find any file in less than one second. Highly recommended:

WhereIsIt

The only caveat is that the developer is not very user friendly, and his support is quite poor. This is very unusual because most small-time shareware developers are very friendly and supportive.

Another very happy WhereIsIt user here.
Never needed any support as it just seems to work.
The great thing is from any PC on my network I can search my ever expanding collection of HDDs. I keep the database on our NAS box.

whereisit is a bit overkill for my needs, although it looks like a good program.

I just want a printed log to keep with external drives with archive stuff so I can find a file faster. I have used the printdir program and it is a bit too basic.
I hope to find something in between. Thanks for the suggestions.
