I'm not sure about that 4GB for XP. I did a straight install, didn't change any options at all, just kept clicking all the default OK buttons. I don't think it used up any more than 2GB.

I also wouldn't worry about Vista taking up 12GB either. That's just a sliver of today's hard drives. And if you don't have a newer computer with a big hard drive then you're not ready for Vista anyway.

And to rebut those who talk about Linux being lean and mean compared to Windows ... The last standard Linux install i did was about 5GB for the base, and by the time i added the other stuff i needed it was up to 8GB.

I was just thinking the same thing. What's up with these people complaining about a 12GB footprint? Especially on this forum where we deal with multi GB files all the time. You can buy a new 160GB hard drive for less than the price of the Vista upgrade.

Also, an nVidia 6xxx card can be found for less than the Windows Vista upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised if by January, the 7xxx series will be that cheap.

Performance, of course, is another matter. But I imagine that most of the performance issues are related to beta coding efforts and MS will probably clean up most of the code before it's released.
