OT: Magic Bullet Suite 12

Spectralis wrote on 2/7/2015, 8:32 PM
Red Giant has just released a new version of Magic Bullet Suite which is mostly Vegas compatible. I own the previous version, MBS 11, and wondered whether it's worth the $199 upgrade? This includes the new 'Film' plugin but I'm not sure whether this adds much to what Looks (and all it's presets) offer in MBS 11?

Maybe the new features are worth the upgrade for pro film makers but is it worth it if you're not in that league? I already have compatibility with Vegas for Looks and wondered if the other colour correction plugins in the Suite are adding significantly different features?

I've only got the Magic Bullet Looks program from Suite 11 but I did upgrade to MBL3 the other day. First impression is that it a substantial advance in features over MBL2 - it seems to be well thought out IMO. The new presets are really good, though this is very much personal taste. I am quite happy to have upgraded to MBL3 ($99 upgrade for MBL only).

My great disappointment is that Colorista III is not compatible with Vegas. I watched a Colorista demo video a few years ago and was impressed by it and would have bought if it were Vegas friendly.

For my purposes - personal use, not professional - the other Vegas compatible plug-ins were not ones that I thought I would need. In fact, the new Mojo and Cosmo tools are in MBL3 though I don't know if they are cut-down versions of these plug-ins if they were bought separately.

Hi Dexcon, there is a Colorista component in MBL3. Have you had a look at that? Could be it's not the FULL picnic. I too like the UG, esp. for $99!

Hi Grazie

I suspect that Colorista in MBL is a sausage short of a BBQ. Yes, it's there, but I recall from RG's video demo that the full version of Colorista included masking with multiple anchor points within which you could change the color of a selected item - and then auto motion track that item - it looked great. Colorista in MBL for Vegas seems to be limited to a combination of Sony Color Curves, HSL and Color Correction.

NewBlue's ColorFast does a little more but is limited to 4 anchor points and does not have motion tracking. I rather like pan/crop in Vegas because it allows for multiple anchor points, but it of course does not have auto motion tracking and, even worse, the feathering color is only mid grey which does not suit all situations and sometimes makes the effect look all too obvious - no feathering looks too sharp, but the grey feathering looks even worse. I'd love it if there were a color choice on Vegas' pan/crop feathering.

Nonetheless, MBL3 is very much a worthwhile step up from MBL2 - IMO.

Cheers

Conrad

Yeah I think if your only a Vegas user than probably just upgrading looks is the way to go. I use Premiere as well so I plan on upgrading to the new suite.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. Looks 2 and all the extra presets I bought offer so much variety I'll probably hold off upgrading until RG has a sale. Maybe then I'll have more experience with colour correction to appreciate what's new in MBL3.

I too have been contemplating upgrading to Suite 12, but considering that I just bought version 11 during the December 40% off sale, I would really need to see some major reasons to spend more money. Based on the information from Red Giant's website, I too agree that Colorista III is one of the most note-worthy enhanced modules. I like that Colorista masks are no longer limited to just rectangles and ellipses, and now use AE's own masks. In MB Looks, there seem to be a number of small improvements, with the most major being more features in Colorista (no surprise). The addition of 198 new preset looks does nothing for me, as I always create my own based off of ones that I like. The new MB Film module also does nothing for me, as I can create those easily with Looks. Anyway, I will wait until next December for the next 40% off sale. By then, there will probably be a major Trapcode release as well, based on the fact that there is currently a public beta on the Trapcode developer's site.

I'm currently waiting in Que to ask tech support a question regarding a feature that bodes well for Vegas Pro users - Apparently Open GL is the preferred GPU hardware implementation over NVidia CUDA for MBL3 and given that Radeon cards are Open GL I'm wondering if there won't be a performance improvement over MBL2.

I'll find out more once I get the chance to ask but given that Premiere PRO CS6 does not support Open GL - which has been my default NLE, this is but another reason for my moving to Vegas Pro once I get my Radeon card installed which is to be delivered tomorrow.

As far as I am aware, Nvidia cards support both Cuda and OpenCL.

@Tech Diver - if you read the various graphics cards for Vegas Pro threads, you'll read references to NVidia's lackluster implementation of Open CL - to the point that unless you have an older GTX 580, you're SOL with proper GPU acceleration in rendering from Vegas Pro.

Even Adobe's Photoshop Mercury Render Engine prefers Open CL and from what I've read, doesn't even support NVidia's CUDA technology - although I could be wrong.
Spectralis wrote on 2/8/2015, 4:35 PM
The reason I favour CUDA cards is because I use Octane Render for 3D rendering. It's a shame that Sony and Red Giant can't implement both NVidia and AMD code properly so we wouldn't need to play pot luck each time we buy a new GPU card. It's especially annoying considering some of the latest cards from both NVidia and AMD are incredibly powerful.

While I use CUDA myself I want Vegas/RG compatibility for all AMD cards as well. When both platforms are fully supported this will be a win/win situation for all of us because we can then take advantage of competitive pricing between NVidia and AMD. The greater the range of GPU cards we have to choose from the more this will facilitate the creative development of video & 3D.

Just got the official word from Red Giant Software. According to Eric the rep I chatted with he said the following about MB3:

"Magic Bullet Looks 3 does rely on Open CL and can't take advantage of the CUDA architecture."

"This new version should be more nimble. It's been almost completely rebuilt from the ground up and renders quicker."

They don't appear to be developing any other apps to work with Vegas Pro although he said putting in a request for other apps is what determines whether they will create more or not.

I think there's a conflict here between the Suites and Universe development. I really like Universe so now that MBL3 doesn't support CUDA I'll focus on Universe instead. It's really disappointing that RG seems to change the compatibility of its products from version to version without alerting customers. It reminds me of when they stopped officially supporting Vegas for awhile. They aren't reliable and don't transmit compatibility changes to customers. Very disappointed!

Up until PPro CC, it din't support Open CL either, it wasn't until Creative Cloud that they added support for Open CL graphics cards. SO basically I"m left with Premiere Pro Cs6 that is CUDA only based, and if I choose to use it or Vegas Pro, one app is going to suffer in the process due to substandard performance. Being a one man shop, I don't have the time to deal with multiple NLE's. I prefer to settle on one and just get my work done.

Red Giant makes some great tools, just too bad they don't consider Vegas Pro an NLE to develop for - especially since it fully supports OFX based plugins.
