Found one at a price I couldn't refuse. Doesn't seem to want to play DV AVI files. Does play WMV9 and m2t HDV files and doesn't seem to do a bad job of downscaling them to SD and sending that down the composite video connection.
No joy so far playing mp4 straight from the EX1, I'll try to see if I can render them to mpg, if it'll play HQ I'll be very happy. Plays SD DVD images just fine although you seem to have to point it at the IFO file manually, maybe there's a way around that. Not that interested in the fine points as I just bought it to playout demo reels to a HDTV, looks fine for that. The 450HD comes with a HDMI port so connection to the HDTV should be a breeze.
At times the thing can be a tad tardy and a GigE port would have been nice still, for what I paid for I'm not complaining. What I really am not happy about is you can fit any sized 3.5" SATA disk inside the plastic coffin and there's no fan and not a lot of vents. Before I leave it running all day I'm going to do some work with a Dremel and add a small fan.
Not as hard to use as some reviews would indicate and given how you can play files off the local HDD or from anything shared on your network or a FTP server or an attached USB drive I can't see how it could be made as simple as a STB player.
A dig around some dodgy forums indicates there's an eMule client for it as well, parrot not included :)

Bob.
