August 24, 2006 (Reuters) -- Apple Computer Inc. will recall 1.8 million lithium-ion laptop batteries after nine devices overheated, causing minor burns in two users, U.S. safety regulators announced today.

The recall is the second-biggest in U.S. history involving electronics or computers, following Dell Inc.'s recall of 4.1 million lithium-ion batteries last week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said.

In both cases, the batteries had power cells made by Sony Corp..

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple will recall 1.1 million batteries sold with laptops in the United States and 700,000 abroad, the safety agency said. They were sold with Apple iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 computers from October 2003, through this month, according to the safety commission.

According to the CPSC: "The recalled lithium-ion batteries were used with the following computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Consumers should remove the battery from the computer to view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of the unit."

Lithium-Ion batteries have a very delicate chemistry and are somewhat dangerous by their very nature. They are very sensitive to the way they are charged. I'm not so sure it's actually Sony's batteries or the design of the charging circuits on the Dell and Apple notebook computers.
