OT: Netgear SC101 Central Storage

FYI - I bought the SC101 over a week ago and returned it on Sunday. After 25 hours of trying I just could not get it to work. So I am back to the after market firewire/usb cases. Bottom line is that it doesn't do well getting an IP address and keeping it. I also had a problem with a Seagate drive that was on the acceptable list.

I purchased the SC101 and got it working after a little tinkering. After a couple of weeks of erratic performance, I contacted this company: http://www.zetera.com/ who make the software for the SC101. The tech support guy was great and he gave me a copy of their software which works 10x better then the Netgear modified version. Since then, the performance has improved dramatically. His story to me was that Netgear wanted a version of the software that had their preferred GUI. The Zetera software is very simple and effective. FWIW.

I've been using the NSLU2 for 2 years now and never had a problem. It runs 24h/24h and never crashed. I have 2 seagate disks hooked to it.

If you look at the entry for it in wikipedia you will find links to some open source upgrades that claim to increase its speed.

Not sure the opensource firmwares will actually increase speed by much but it will allow you to install custom packages like FTP servers, webcam drivers, printer drivers etc..

I have been using the NSLU2 for two year now and it works great!
Do a search on the web for NSLU2, and have fun.
