OT: New idea in microphone stands

It isn't very often that I'm impressed with something as mundane as a microphone stand, but Galaxy Audio has come up with a new idea that looks pretty useful. It transforms from a standard straight microphone stand to a fully adjustable boom stand in seconds. I thought somebody here might be interested.

Clever. I like the way it is more compact when its retracted. Booms are more bulky.

Certainly got me interested. Mic stands are anything but mundane to someone who is forever fighting to get the big chrome ones out of shot.

The concept of this mic stand isn't exactly new though, Manfrotto have a lighting stand that does the same trick and a mighty handy bit of kit it is as well. The boom is a bit longer though and the unit does come with a counterweight. I've used one several times as a mic boom stand.

Kinda nice that the boom slides down inside the upright. But...never had a problem with the kind that slides down along the outside of it. And I bought a dozen for $100 at Musician's Friend a while back.

I think they would be great in a studio, but on a gig those splayed legs tend to get in the way of music stands, drum kits, and keyboard stands, and get stepped on, making them wobbly and tilted thereafter. I went through twenty of the expensive blue ones in about five years, and what were left (reassembled) got donated to an elementary school. OTOH, the dual telescope idea looks like a winner.

An option for the the traditional "barbell" base would be better. Make good doorstops too.

Cool idea, but when I looked at Galaxy Audio's "Where to Buy" page and visited 2 of the vendors there -- BH PhotoVideo and Musician's Friend -- there is no such mic stand for sale on either site.

John, nothing mundane there at all! Totally smart design. I wish I had had this on my last V/O on-site work.

Can't be sourced in the UK, otherwise I'd have purchased one.

Hmmm.....
