The beta solved some serious problems I was having with "secure" sites. It also created new problems, but the new ones were not critical.
Now I'm using what they're calling Release Candidate 1 -- or something like that. It's a little less buggy. Until further notice, I'm sticking with 8.

I also noticed that Sun now has a Java plug-in for the 64 bit versions of IE:

I just spent ninety minutes troubleshooting a friend's computer that wouldn't navigate into a site with some sign-up forms she had to fill out. Turns out her computer had somehow updated itself to IE8 Beta. I tried lots of things to fix her problem, but ultimately uninstalled the update and downgraded to IE7. That fixed the problem.

I really try to stay away from many of the new programs from Microsoft (and I suspect this is also true of Apple, but maybe not) because they are increasingly trying so hard to close all possible security holes that the product functionality is being hampered. Add to that the burden of satisfying DRM requirements, and the general tendency towards bloat and sloppy program, and the result is not pretty. Except for my new computer, all other computers here run IE7 (a few w/ Firefox) and they work just fine.
