OT-New Machine specs

Jessariah67 wrote on 12/29/2020, 7:25 AM

Hey All,

I've been doing a lot of research (especially here) on system specs, but even threads that are less than a year old seem outdated with some of the new things that have just recently come out. One thing in particular seems to be some changes that occurred between VP16 & VP17. I personally noticed a stability issue when switching to VP17, and it seems to be continuing (for me) in VP18. So I'm at that place where my "new computer" is actually 3 years old now (time flies, doesn't it?), and when I read things like "an i7-8700 is NOT a workstation..." (that's what I have), I feel like Vegas has literally outgrown me. So it seems that a new system is not only going to give me better performance, but also greater stability.

Like I said, my current system is i7-8700, GTX 1060 6G (founder's), 32G RAM. I also work off of external USB HDD and will be moving to internal SSD drives via a hotswappable drive bay.

My main question is the cpu. I've always used intel, but I've seen more and more people seeming to lean toward AMD - especially with the new Ryzen 5xxx series (I'm looking at the Ryzen 9 5900 vs. an i9 10900). I've decided on the RTX 3080, but I've read in some places where AMD & Nvidia don't always play nice.

For me, stability and timeline performance is more important than rendering speeds.

Any input is appreciated!

I really don't think new hardware is a sure bet for improved stability. Try figuring out what the cause is- often it's certain media and certain GPUs.

I too would continue to look for what is causing the instability. Since you are considering a new computer, that would mean a "blank" canvas to install software on. A fresh Win10 installation.

While I have had crashes with VP18, I found VP17 pretty stable on my computer. Specs in the signature.

As for AMD and Nvidia not playing nice together, I do not think that is really true. It's a graphics card and is seen as such. There is nothing I am aware of installed on an AMD motherboard that does anything against a Nvidia graphics card. It would have been reported by all those youtubers that test AMD and Nvidia hardware.

Just to clarify, I'm not seeing a new system as an active "fix" for my current stability issues - I'm more stating them as an additional reason for needing to upgrade. I understand that there are all kinds of factors that go into how a system functions as a whole, which is why I'm particularly interested in opinions/experiences with the newer Ryzens vs. the i9s.On one hand, I've heard the new AMDs are much improved, but I've also read that Vegas, in particular, because of the older code it's based on, works better with certain aspects of the Intel chips. Is that still the case? Stuff like that. What is best for Vegas in particular, at this time...

At your VPro 18, it works for a hardware type as you have the best to change nothing in Options/Preferences/ Video and Options/Preferences/FileI/O after the install of the latest build, unless your drivers are not uptodate.
What are there now with your problems those settings ( screenshots please) and which exact drivernumbers are installed for your Nvidia and Intel GPU's

I know I need to update the Nvidia driver. I had to roll back the last (forced) Intel Driver (I have one monitor connected to my onboard GPU) because Vegas wouldn't open at all after it was updated, then opened fine after I rolled the Intel GPU driver back. I'm on VP18 (373)

Thanks!

First update your Nvidia drivers to the Studio version 460.89, the latest and your Intel GPU 630 to version 27.20.100.9030 as, I presume, is stated in the Help of VPro 18 at " Check for Driver Updates"
Then do a complete reset of your Vegas Pro as stated here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/
After that don't change Video and FileI/O settings from their defaults as these

@Jessariah67 you will find a good mix of Intel and AMD CPU's here. I am using the 3900X with AMD graphics. I am quite happy with AMD VCE for quick rendering utilizing 100% of the GPU.

Waiting to see what the new AMD graphics cards are able to do, but am not willing to spend that type of money unless I am sure that there will be an improvement across the board.

I'm on the Intel 630 and NVIDIA 1050. I recommend switching decoding back to Auto (Intel) from NVIDIA for stability.
