If I were certain that all external connections were good, I'd then check in Device Manager (probably under Sound, video and game controllers) to see whether the system is still recognizing the sound card and that it's still enabled.
Also check the Windows mixer.

Hi, Thanks for the reply - I had checked the devices and mixer already and they were being detected.Nothing had been muted either. Do you know if an audio card can corrupt though?

Just worked on my brother in law's computer a few days ago. Out of the blue his sound disappeared. No sound from anything. Properties recognized the card and said it was working and no conflicts. I let windows search for updated drivers and all of a sudden it all works. One other step is to (in device manager) remove the sound card and re-boot. Windows should find and re-install it.

Hey - thanks for the suggestions. I'm on my other computer right now, but can't wait to try it out. I'll let you know if that works:-)

After none of the troubleshooting worked, 2 days later the sound just came back on its own. It was right after Windows installed a 'critical update" on my computer, so i don't know if that's what fixed it or not, but, it's nice to have sound back with no extra hassel and expense.

Many thanks for all your help:-)
