If I may add my .02.....one thing I really, really like about this forum is that when on-topic, it consistently is more about "how can I do this...." or "check out what I did....." instead of "this $%#@-ing software doesn't work!!" I started with Pinnacle software a couple of years ago and that is what their forum is all about. And for good reason.
I think this is a symptom of the respect which users of this forum have for each other.
When a bit of "semi--related" or completely unrelated news comes along, and I feel the need to share it with others, this community often comes to mind.
"I must tell the guys this ...."
The video forum has far more post than the audio forum because of that and the fact there are many more novices interested in using their cams and video gear with their PC. This makes for a much more active video forum.
The audio forum has no OT "chatting" posts to speak of and those that buy Vegas for audio reasons already have a fair amount of knowledge as to how to deal with audio generally. Very few are total novices.
Speculations on my part;
As a side note, audio takes much less time to render so there's no where near the down-time to post.
Audio guys seem to have a tendency to get aggravated at repeated (read stupid) questions. There may even be a competitive edge since "pro" audio is a much smaller market and those that buy Vegas as a MTR are already or close or want to be "pro".
To sum up, OT is better than no topic or nothing but novice topic, "Don't Worry, Be Happy".
I don't mind off-topics here because they are usually of interest to Vegas users. It's not like there are political or cooking questions. What I do hate is posts that have stupid titles like "Question" or "Confused - Please Help"!
I agree, cant tell you how many different new related software/plug-in/hardware/cool websites/great music/links to others creative work ,I've been turned on to...stuffed my computer with, and all in all broadened my horizons with........(deep breath)
gotta love the Off Topic...
all in all the forum stays on its own unique track.
Jay, been reading and holding back to respond to this - no biggie here, just observations. And maybe why you've felt it necessary to post "this" later on . . . but for the moment . . .
1/- We don't need to grumble/complain to be recognised here: sometimes just sometimes we may wish to share accomplishments - A GOOD thang!
2/- We aren't just NLE editors!
3/- We have "other" interests: these can/could be loosely "folded", as with omelettes, into what we do with Vegas
4/- We have many options to be creative - along with this come many opinions and experiences and a very wide experience base - least of which is that of life.
Jay, thank you for making this thread. Asking this question has focussed mine and others attention to the "real" value of OT stuff. In my opinion it allows us all to express our actual humanity and have a reality check on what can be a very obsessive and insular, solitary endeavour - editing video! I feel I can sometimes need another means of communication - OTs can provide an outlet/valve for this too! So, Jay, as a result of asking the question it is as if you have offered a permission to others to go right ahead and post OTs .. nice one Jay! This hasn't been lost on this Old Boot either . . ;)
Best regards,
Graham "Grazie" Bernard
.. . ps: Oh yes! What's wrong with posting cooking recipes here? I have a smashing one for French onion soup: You start off with large Spanish onions and . .. hah! only joshing ! . .. keep the faith good people .. ! ;)
"Like, my car engine won't start, and I was on the way to get a new book on Vegas. Any idea why my engine won't start? :) "
. . . So, reading your response indicates to me that there is nothing in what I wrote that has neither value or makes sense for you? Ok, understood. I will remember this in future.
We've got a scrumptious recipe forum going over at http://www.chienchat.com/forum/index! It's up to 161 recipes so far (ok, some of them are silly nonsense, but most are mouthwatering). You'll have to register for chienchat.com to get access, but it's worth it. ;)
I think you have may have read something into my post that wasn't my intent. It was merely an observation on my part--no more, no less. I certainly wasn't grumbling or complaining. As I said, I'm as guilty as anyone of posting off topic subjects. I was merely wondering if it bothered anyone. Looks like it doesn't.
I have no problem with off topic posts, especially if they're labeled "OT", with a description of what it's about....just like this one is a good example. The ones that bother me are the ones that say "Vegas 5.0", or just "Help needed", and gives you no indication of what the post is about until you open it and start reading it. There's a lot that can be learned from off topic posts, so keep them in the forum.....although, I did find the one thread titled "How do you pronounce Grazie" a bit of annoying and way off topic and filled with a bunch of jibberish B.S. Oh well, I guess it keeps the forum members as part of the "family" as most of the forums are titled (ie Acid Product Family, Sound Forge product family". And as in most families there are always some disfunctional members within that family.
In contrast take a look at the Cakewalk forums. They have a forum named the "Coffee House", just for off topic discussions. The problem I experienced with this is that I posted a legitimate post in the Sonar forums, and cakewalk as well as a few users that are attached to Cakewalk's umbilical cord didn't particularly like what I was saying, so they moved the discussions to the coffee house on grounds that the post was "off topic". While at the same time there were 20 other recent posts that had nothing to do with Sonar. It's really ironic when I also helped out a lot of their users with questions regarding mastering, microphone differences along with their uses, and micing techniques in their same Sonar forum, and then it's ok with them although, these had nothing to do with Sonar either. So I guess my point is, although an off topic forum could be a good idea, it's really not when the company in charge of moderating the forums, now has an outlet to move your posts at their own discretion and chose to do so when they start to recieve a black eye. I like the Sony forums and how they are, because when a user makes a negative post of how they feel, this allows you to see both the negative and positive viewpoints of their product. Cakewalk can have their dictatorship forums, where the environment is always happy...happy...joy...joy, but most people know life isn't always a bowl of cherries and nothing is ever perfect. It's too bad, that their forum moderators actions left such a bad taste in my mouth, that I will no longer ever consider a Cakewalk product ever again, or recommend one to anyone else, just because of their non ethical forum moderator behavior.
