OT: One sweet little DVD player

Since many (perhaps most) of you are getting involved in DVD authoring as the next logical step after creating video with VV3, I thought I'd mention that I just bought a cheap DVD player for my editing desk. I specifically wanted a player that could read DVD-RWs, since my technique is to burn to an RW disk to verify proper operation before burning to DVD-R disks.

After buying and returning a couple of different machines last week, I came across the Apex AD-1500. This unit comes from China and is sold under a couple of different brand names. It plays everything I can throw at it beautifully. The best part? It can be bought right now for as little at $39!

There are a couple of different Apex units out there. I returned an Apex 1201 because navigation via the remote control was very clumsy and nonstandard.

The Apex machines are a good value, I have the original AD-600a at home. Most all of them also play CD-Rs full of MP3 files, and the newer ones play PhotoCD and CD-Rs full of JPEGs as a slideshow.

I agree. APEX 1500 will play just about ANYTHING you throw at it. It's a GEM. I bought 2 of them. They very cheap, and cheaply made, but who cares. If if breaks, I'll buy a new one--they're only $69.00.

Word of advice, do not lift or move the player too much past horizontal with a DVD in it--even with the power off. There isn't any mechanism to hold it in place, so it will become loose inside.

And I won't mention the "Special Features" that can be activated by upgrading the firmware, which is as simple as slipping in a cd-r.

Be aware that there is a newer version of this model that may no longer support VCDs:
