OT: osnews.com likes Sony Vegas

This morning I was reading various technology news, as I do on the weekends, when I noticed something particular in the latest front page story at digg.com entitled "Ubuntu: One More Release, Yet More Polish". When it comes to video editing software, their first thought is Sony Vegas.

From osnews.com, the story talks about the latest release of the popular Linux operating system Ubuntu, which has been the leading force in the Linux home-user movement over the last few years (evening resulting in a few long rants by yours truely on the matter). They write "...what strikes you the most is the amount of polish that has been going on in the last few months on the existing tools. Everything just feels more professional, more stable, more good looking, heck, even more HIG-compliant. I like what I see and I hope more people take notice too."

Okay, so that's a nice review, but what they dropped at the end caught my eye, "If only there was a A/V Gaim version that worked, and a port of Sony Vegas (no, there is no video editing app on Linux that does things *as well and as stable* as most Windows/Mac NLEs do it, so please don't suggest to me your favorite Linux video editing app -- I tried them ALL)."

I love it; unabashed, with no need to explain themselves for their preference and no confused replies in the comments section for their choice of video editors, it's Sony Vegas. Everyday more and more home and professional editors are using and talking about Sony Vegas, and not as 'the alternative'. Woo! That's all.

Jonathan -

I certainly agree that the exposure is a good thing, and I agree with your sentiments regarding external evidence of Vegas adoption. However, full disclosure is warranted that the author of the osnews.com article is our very own Eugenia, frequent poster 'round these parts, recent adoptee of Vegas, and well-known contributor to osnews. So no real surprise.

Sony could really get a jump on folks by doing a Linux version of Vegas. I'm seeing more and more people move to mac or linux... and right now Linux has no great editor. First to market is a huge benefit. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on one of my machines and was extremely impressed.

If I could have Vegas for Linux, I'd drop kick Windows and never look back.
